The popular journey between Bengaluru and Goa is set to become faster. A new train service promises to connect the tech hub with the coastal paradise in as little as 13 hours, offering a compelling new option for travellers.
The New Vande Bharat Express
The buzz revolves around a newly
sanctioned Vande Bharat Express, set to connect Yesvantpur in Bengaluru with Madgaon in Goa. The Railway Board approved this much-anticipated service on October 30, 2026, creating a direct, daytime travel option between the two states. The service is planned to run six days a week. This chair-car train will operate under train numbers 26655 (Yesvantpur to Madgaon) and 26656 (Madgaon to Yesvantpur). While existing express trains like the Yesvantpur-Vasco da Gama Express (17309) take around 13 hours and 40 minutes, the new Vande Bharat aims to be one of the quickest rail options on the route.
Timings and Route Details
According to the proposed schedule, the train from Yesvantpur to Madgaon (26655) is expected to depart at 7:35 AM and arrive at 8:55 PM, taking 13 hours and 20 minutes. This service will not run on Wednesdays. On its return journey, the train from Madgaon to Yesvantpur (26656) will leave at 8:20 AM and reach at 9:15 PM, with a slightly shorter travel time of 12 hours and 55 minutes; it will be unavailable on Thursdays. The route is planned to run via Mangaluru, with 12 stops including Hassan, Sakleshpur, Mangaluru Junction, Udupi, and Karwar, connecting several key towns in Karnataka's interior and coastal regions.
A Journey Through the Ghats
More than just a commute, this train journey is an experience. A significant highlight is the stretch through the Western Ghats, particularly between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road. Passengers are treated to spectacular views of lush forests, deep valleys, and mist-covered mountains. The route is especially famous for passing close to the magnificent Dudhsagar Falls, a four-tiered waterfall that becomes a powerful 'Sea of Milk' during the monsoon season. This scenic beauty makes the train a popular choice for nature lovers and adventure seekers, offering a visual treat that other modes of transport cannot match.
Comparing Your Travel Options
While the new train offers a great balance of speed, comfort, and scenery, it's worth weighing it against other options. A flight is the fastest way to get to Goa, but it comes at a higher cost and includes extra time for airport check_in and travel to and from the airport. Overnight buses are a budget_friendly alternative, though they can be less comfortable and are subject to road traffic. Driving your own car provides the most flexibility for exploring along the way but can be a long and tiring 10 to 12_hour journey. The train, therefore, sits in a sweet spot, providing a relaxing, cost_effective, and picturesque way to travel without the fatigue of driving or the rush of air travel.
How to Book and What to Expect
While the official launch date and fares for the new Vande Bharat Express are yet to be announced, services are expected to begin in November 2026. Tickets for existing trains can be booked through the official IRCTC website or app, as well as various authorized online travel agencies. For the best chance of securing a seat, especially a window seat for the views, it is advisable to book well in advance. Existing daily trains like the Ypr Vsg Exp (17309) offer classes such as Sleeper, 3A, and 2A, with fares on this route generally ranging from around ₹400 to ₹1500 depending on the class.
