A National Mission Needs a Workforce
India's ambitious goals for renewable energy, especially under schemes like the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, have created a massive demand not just for solar panels, but for people who can install and maintain them. The push to solarise millions
of households means the country needs a dedicated army of skilled technicians. This isn't just about manufacturing; it's about the labour-intensive work of site assessment, installation, and after-sales service, which is creating a boom in green jobs. This surge in demand has outpaced the supply of trained professionals, creating a critical skills gap that a new kind of institution is rushing to fill.
Inside the Solar Classroom
These new solar academies are intensely practical. The curriculum moves quickly from theory to hands-on training, often in programs lasting from one to three months. A typical course covers everything a technician needs to know: understanding solar radiation, conducting site surveys, designing a system, and the correct procedures for mounting panels. Trainees also learn crucial electrical skills like wiring, inverter configuration, and battery systems. Safety is a major component, with modules on personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe working practices, especially at heights. Many of these courses are certified by the Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCGJ), ensuring they meet national occupational standards.
The New 'Suryamitras'
The trainees, often called 'Suryamitras' or 'friends of the sun,' come from diverse backgrounds. Many are youth from rural areas, ITI diploma holders in trades like electrician or wireman, and increasingly, women seeking to enter the technical workforce. Government-sponsored residential programs, often free of cost, make this training accessible to unemployed youth and those from economically weaker sections. For many, it’s a direct pathway to a stable, salaried career in a future-proof industry. Recent initiatives, like the India-Australia Rooftop Solar Training Academy, have a specific focus on empowering women and youth for these roles.
From Training to Employment
Graduation from a solar academy opens up immediate job prospects. With thousands of vacancies for solar technicians, installers, and project engineers, the demand is high. Top renewable energy companies, EPC contractors, and local installation businesses are actively hiring certified professionals. Many training institutes facilitate placements and have tie-ups with hundreds of industry partners. The career path for a certified technician can lead to roles in project management, operations and maintenance, or even entrepreneurship, with some graduates starting their own solar installation businesses. The skills learned are transferable across the country, with major solar job hubs emerging in states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.
