From National Pride to a Career Path
The success of missions like Chandrayaan-3 and Mangalyaan has transformed the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) into a household name and a symbol of immense national pride. These achievements have done more than just place India on the global
space map; they have sparked a fire of curiosity among students across the country. Watching a rover successfully land on the lunar south pole or an orbiter reach Mars on a shoestring budget has made space exploration tangible and exciting. This inspiration is a critical first step, turning childhood wonder about the stars into a serious consideration for a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). ISRO has strategically harnessed this enthusiasm, creating structured pathways for students to engage with space science from a young age.
Catching Them Young: The YUVIKA Programme
One of ISRO's flagship initiatives is the “YUva VIgyani KAryakram” (YUVIKA), or Young Scientist Programme. This annual two-week residential programme is designed specifically to “catch them young,” targeting students who have completed Class 9. It aims to provide a foundational understanding of space science, technology, and applications. Selected students from every state and union territory get the incredible opportunity to visit ISRO centres, interact with senior scientists, and participate in hands-on activities. The curriculum includes everything from building model rockets and DIY satellite kits to lectures on the basics of space technology. The 2026 edition, for example, saw over 100,000 applicants for just 456 spots, highlighting the immense demand and prestige associated with the program. YUVIKA is a direct channel, turning mission-fueled excitement into practical, formative experience.
Hands-On Experience: Building Satellites and More
Beyond orientation programmes, ISRO actively encourages hands-on learning by involving students in real-world projects. The Student Satellite project is a prime example, allowing university and college students to design, build, and launch their own small satellites with guidance from ISRO experts. This initiative provides invaluable practical experience in satellite technology, from payload development to fabrication and testing. Furthermore, ISRO facilitates various workshops, online courses through its Jigyasa portal, and mobile exhibitions like the 'Space on Wheels' bus to bring space science directly to students in different parts of the country. These efforts, combined with interactions with astronauts and mission scientists, break down the complexities of space exploration and make it an accessible field of study.
Building a Pipeline for Future Talent
ISRO's educational outreach is also about building a sustainable talent pipeline for India's future space ambitions, which include a space station and human spaceflight. The organisation collaborates extensively with academic institutions across the country. It establishes Space Technology Cells, Incubation Centres, and Regional Academic Centres for Space to foster research and innovation at the university level. These centres work on projects directly relevant to ISRO's programmes. Moreover, institutions like the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) were established with the Department of Space to offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses specifically tailored to produce high-quality engineers and scientists for the space programme. By creating this ecosystem, ISRO ensures that the inspiration it generates is matched with high-calibre educational and career opportunities.
