In 2023, approximately one in 2,828 papers had a fake citation; by early 2026, that number jumped to one in 277. Using advanced algorithms, the tools verify a citation’s core components—author, title, journal, and year of publication—to confirm that the source is real and the details match an existing publication. Some even generate a confidence score, flagging references that are unverifiable or appear to be AI-generated hallucinations. For professors and journal editors, who previously had to rely on manual spot-checks, these tools offer a way to systematically audit submissions at scale.
