Taxis: The Classic Choice
Upon exiting Phu Quoc International Airport, you'll find a line of official taxis ready to take you to your destination. This is a straightforward and reliable option, especially for first-time visitors or those with heavy luggage. Reputable companies
like Vinasun or Mai Linh are common, though the island is also served by the all-electric VinFast fleet of Xanh SM. Fares are metered, and a trip from the airport to Duong Dong, the main town, typically costs between 180,000 and 220,000 VND. The journey to resorts in the far north or south will cost more. Most drivers have a basic understanding of English and are familiar with major hotels and resorts. Taxis are great for direct point-to-point travel any time of day, though an airport exit fee of around 10,000 VND may be added to your fare.
Ride-Hailing Apps: Convenience in Your Palm
For tech-savvy travellers, ride-hailing apps are a game-changer. Grab is the dominant player in Phu Quoc and works across most of the island for both cars (GrabCar) and motorbike taxis (GrabBike). The key advantage is seeing the fixed price upfront before you book, eliminating any fare negotiations. A GrabCar from the airport to the central Long Beach area costs around 60,000 VND, not including the airport fee. Another app, Xanh SM, offers rides in their fleet of electric VinFast taxis and can be booked through their app or hailed on the street. These services are ideal for single trips, heading out for dinner, or when you prefer the certainty of a pre-calculated fare. Note that at the airport, you'll need to follow signs to the designated Grab pick-up zone.
Motorbike Rental: The Freedom to Explore
Renting a motorbike or scooter is the most popular way for adventurous travellers to explore Phu Quoc on their own terms. It offers unparalleled freedom to discover hidden beaches, remote fishing villages, and winding country roads. Rental shops are plentiful in Duong Dong and along the main tourist strip of Long Beach, with many hotels also offering the service. Prices for a standard automatic scooter are very affordable, typically ranging from 120,000 to 180,000 VND per day. While renting is easy, it's crucial to ensure you have a valid motorbike license and an International Driving Permit (IDP). Always check the bike’s condition—especially brakes, tires, and lights—and wear the provided helmet. The main roads are generally in good condition, but rural tracks can be challenging, particularly during the rainy season.
Car Hire: Comfort for Groups and Families
If you're travelling with family, in a group, or simply prefer the comfort of an air-conditioned vehicle, hiring a car with a driver is an excellent option. This can be arranged for a full day of sightseeing or for simple point-to-point transfers. The cost for a full day is typically upwards of $80 USD. While more expensive than a scooter, it can be cost-effective when split among several people and removes the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads. Many companies offer private airport transfers that can be booked online in advance, ensuring a driver is waiting for you upon arrival, which is particularly useful for late-night flights or those staying in more remote resorts.
Bus Services: The Budget-Friendly Route
Phu Quoc's public transport has improved significantly with the introduction of VinBus, an operator of modern, air-conditioned electric buses. Several routes connect the airport to major hubs like Duong Dong, Grand World, and Sunset Town, as well as key resorts along the west coast. Fares are very reasonable, costing between 20,000 and 50,000 VND per trip depending on the distance. This is the most budget-friendly way to travel, especially for solo travellers with light luggage. However, the network does not cover the entire island, so it’s best for travel along specific, popular corridors. Many larger resorts also provide their own shuttle services for guests, so it’s worth checking with your hotel.
