The long journey between Bengaluru and Goa, a route popular with tourists and professionals alike, is set to become significantly faster and more comfortable. A newly approved train service promises to slash travel time to just under 13 hours.
Introducing the Vande Bharat Express
The Indian
Railways has officially approved the introduction of a new Vande Bharat Express service connecting Yesvantpur in Bengaluru with Madgaon in Goa. This semi-high-speed, chair-car train is a game-changer for travellers who previously faced road journeys of over 12 hours or longer train rides. The new service, operating under train numbers 26655/26656, will run six days a week, providing a reliable daytime travel option between the two states. The approval for this much-anticipated route was confirmed by the Railway Board on October 30, 2026.
Mapping the Scenic Route
One of the most appealing aspects of this new service is its picturesque route through the Western Ghats. Passengers will be treated to panoramic views of lush hills and dense forests, particularly on the stunning stretch between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road. The train will run via Mangaluru Junction, with 12 intermediate stops designed to connect key towns in Karnataka's interior and coastal belts before reaching Goa. Major stops include Hassan, Sakleshpur, Mangaluru Junction, Udupi, Murdeshwar, and Karwar, making it a convenient option for tourists and residents across the region.
Timings and Schedule Details
According to the proposed schedule, train number 26655 will depart from Yesvantpur at 7:35 AM and arrive in Madgaon at 8:55 PM, making the journey approximately 13 hours and 20 minutes long. This service will run daily, except on Wednesdays. For the return journey, train number 26656 is scheduled to leave Madgaon at 8:20 AM and reach Yesvantpur at 9:15 PM, with a slightly shorter travel time of 12 hours and 55 minutes. The return service will not operate on Thursdays. The introduction of this route will also lead to the discontinuation of the existing Madgaon-Mangaluru Central Vande Bharat Express.
What This Means for Travellers
This new Vande Bharat Express is a significant upgrade in connectivity between the tech hub of Bengaluru and the popular tourist destination of Goa. Previously, road travel could take anywhere from 11 to over 14 hours depending on the route and traffic conditions, while existing train journeys were often longer overnight trips. This service provides a faster, more comfortable, and scenic daytime alternative. The completion of electrification work on the Bengaluru–Mangaluru railway route in December 2025 was a crucial step that enabled the introduction of this high–speed service. While the Railway Board has approved the service, the official launch date and ticket prices are yet to be announced, with reports suggesting a possible start in the third week of November 2026.
