For years, Global Capability Centres in India were synonymous with cost arbitrage and volume-based hiring for operational support. Today, the narrative has fundamentally changed. India now hosts over 2,100 GCCs employing more than 2.3 million professionals,
but the real story isn't just the growth; it's the evolution. This has led to longer hiring cycles for niche positions, as the demand for top-tier talent far exceeds the available supply.
The AI Talent War
The single biggest driver of the new hiring pattern is Artificial Intelligence. AI and Machine Learning roles are the fastest-growing job categories within GCCs, with demand surging by over 300% for some specialisations. Companies across all sectors—from finance and healthcare to manufacturing—are building dedicated AI centres of excellence in India. This has created an intense talent war, with NASSCOM estimating that the demand for AI/ML professionals exceeds supply by a factor of three. As a result, candidates with proven skills in Generative AI, MLOps, and data science are commanding significant salary premiums and have multiple offers to choose from.
In-Demand Skills Beyond AI
While AI dominates headlines, the demand for specialised talent is broad. Skills-first recruitment is the new norm, with nearly half of GCCs prioritising demonstrable capabilities over academic pedigree. The most sought-after skills clusters include: Cloud Engineering (architects, DevSecOps), Cybersecurity (threat detection, governance), Data Engineering, and Product Management with end-to-end ownership based in India. Professionals who combine this technical expertise with domain knowledge, such as in BFSI or healthcare, are particularly valuable. There's also a growing need for leadership talent that can guide these innovation-led teams, a significant challenge for many GCCs.
What This Means for Job Seekers
For professionals in India, this shift presents both a challenge and an opportunity. The era of getting hired based on a generic engineering degree is fading. To succeed in the current GCC landscape, continuous upskilling is essential. Candidates need to build deep, provable expertise in high-demand areas. This could mean pursuing certifications in cloud platforms, contributing to open-source AI projects, or gaining experience in cybersecurity.
