Start With a Lightweight Bag
Your packing journey begins before you even place a single item inside. The weight of your empty bag is a critical and often overlooked factor. Some hard-shell polycarbonate bags can weigh up to 3.5kg on their own, consuming half of your allowance before you've
even started. Opt for a lightweight backpack or a soft-shell duffel bag, many of which weigh under 1.5kg. This simple switch can grant you an extra 2kg for your actual belongings, a massive advantage when every gram counts.
Plan Outfits, Don't Pack Impulses
The biggest enemy of a light bag is the 'just in case' mindset. Instead of throwing in random items, plan your outfits meticulously. Stick to a coordinated colour palette where every top can be matched with every bottom, maximising your outfit combinations. Aim for three to four tops, two bottoms, and a versatile dress or jumpsuit. This disciplined approach prevents you from packing clothes that will never leave the suitcase. Remember, a single pair of jeans can weigh around 600g, so consider swapping one for lightweight trousers to save precious weight.
Wear Your Heaviest Items on Board
This is a classic travel hack for a reason: it's incredibly effective. Your bulkiest and heaviest items should be on your person, not in your bag. This includes your jacket or coat, your heaviest pair of shoes (like boots or sneakers), and any chunky sweaters. You can always take a jacket off once you're on the plane. Layering a couple of tops can also save a surprising amount of space and weight. This strategy instantly frees up significant volume and, more importantly, weight from your cabin bag.
Switch to Solid Toiletries
Liquids are heavy. Switching to solid toiletries is a game-changer for carry-on travel. Solid shampoo and conditioner bars, toothpaste tablets, and solid perfume sticks are not subject to the 100ml liquid restrictions and are significantly lighter than their liquid counterparts. A full-sized bar of soap is lighter than a bottle of body wash, and cutting that bar in half saves even more weight. This swap not only lightens your load but also eliminates the risk of messy leaks in your bag.
Digitise Your Entertainment and Documents
Physical books are a luxury you can't afford with a 7kg limit. A single paperback can weigh 200-300g, while an e-reader or tablet holds thousands of books for a similar weight. The same goes for travel documents. Download your boarding passes, hotel confirmations, and tickets to your phone. This not only saves weight but also reduces clutter, keeping your essential documents securely in one digital place. By ditching paper, you can save hundreds of grams that are better used for other essentials.
Use Your 'Personal Item' Allowance
Many domestic carriers in India, like IndiGo and Air India, permit a small personal item such as a laptop bag or a large handbag in addition to your 7kg cabin bag. This is often an underutilised allowance. Strategically move your heaviest small items into this personal bag. This can include your laptop or tablet, which can weigh up to 1.5kg, as well as your power bank, chargers, and wallet. Maximising this allowance is key to keeping your main cabin bag under the strict weight threshold.
