A Landmark in Connectivity
The Vande Bharat Express to Srinagar is more than just a train; it's a milestone in India's railway history. Operating on the newly completed Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), this service connects the Kashmir Valley to the rest of the country’s
rail network year-round. This overcomes the traditional reliance on the often-unpredictable Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which is prone to closures from landslides and heavy snowfall. The introduction of this service dramatically cuts down travel time and boosts all-weather connectivity, heralding a new era for tourism, trade, and local commuters.
The Route, Timings, and Frequency
The train operates between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, covering a distance of approximately 269 kilometres. The journey takes about 4 hours and 45 minutes, a significant improvement over the 8 to 11 hours required by road. Currently, there are multiple Vande Bharat services on this route. For instance, train number 26401 departs from Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM and reaches Srinagar at 11:10 AM, operating six days a week (excluding Tuesdays). Another service, train number 26403, offers a different timing. Due to immense demand, a third Vande Bharat service for this route has been approved and is expected to start soon, providing even more options for travellers. Key stops along the way include Udhampur, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, and Banihal.
A Journey Like No Other
The trip itself is a major attraction. The train travels across some of India's most stunning engineering marvels, including the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. Passengers are treated to breathtaking views of the Himalayan landscape through large panoramic windows. The coaches are climate-controlled with advanced heating systems to combat sub-zero temperatures, making the journey comfortable even in harsh winters. Executive Chair Car seats can rotate 180 degrees, allowing travellers to fully immerse themselves in the scenic beauty.
Onboard Amenities and Classes
The Srinagar Vande Bharat is equipped with modern amenities designed for comfort and convenience. Passengers can choose between two classes: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC). All coaches feature reclining seats, onboard Wi-Fi for connectivity, an infotainment system, and charging ports for electronic devices. Catering services are included in the ticket price, with options for meals onboard. The train is also designed for safety and hygiene, with CCTV cameras, automatic doors, and bio-vacuum toilets.
Booking Tickets and Estimated Costs
Tickets for the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat can be booked through the official IRCTC website or mobile app. Given the high demand since its launch, it is highly recommended to book your tickets well in advance. The fare depends on the class of travel. An AC Chair Car ticket costs approximately ₹855, while an Executive Chair Car ticket is priced around ₹1585. These prices are competitive when compared to flights and private taxis, especially considering the reliability and comfort offered by the train.
