Stepping out of the sun and into the shade provides more than just a feeling of relief; it's a significant environmental change. The air temperature in a shaded area can be noticeably cooler than in direct sunlight. Studies have shown that shaded surfaces
can be 11–25°C cooler than surfaces in the direct sun. This is because shade blocks a significant amount of the sun's infrared radiation, which is what makes you feel hot. Beyond just blocking light, trees provide an additional cooling benefit through a process called evapotranspiration. Trees pull water from the ground and release it as water vapour through their leaves, a process which actively cools the surrounding air, almost like a natural air conditioner. This dual effect of blocking radiation and actively cooling the air makes tree-lined streets or parks significantly more comfortable and safer during heatwaves.
Why Timing Your Walk Matters
The time of day you choose for your walk is just as important as the path you take. The sun is at its most intense between late morning and late afternoon. Planning your walks for the early morning or after sunset is a simple but highly effective strategy to avoid the worst of the heat and sun exposure. During these times, the sun is lower in the sky, creating longer shadows from buildings and trees, which naturally increases the amount of available shade. Even on a hot day, the ambient temperature is lower during these off-peak hours, reducing the overall stress on your body. If you must walk during the day, pay close attention to the length and intensity of your exercise and take frequent breaks in any available shade.
How to Plan a Shadier Route
A little forethought can transform a sweltering walk into a pleasant one. Before you head out, scout your route. Look for streets lined with mature trees, parks with dense canopies, or paths that run alongside tall buildings which cast long shadows. Some modern mapping tools and apps are even beginning to incorporate shade as a factor in their walking directions, allowing you to choose a route that prioritizes shade over the shortest distance. If you're exploring a new area, consider doing a quick drive-by or using online street-view tools to identify promising, shady corridors. Combining a shadier route with a cooler time of day is the best combination for a safe walk.
Dressing for the Heat
Your clothing is your personal shade. The right attire can make a huge difference in how your body handles the heat. Opt for clothes that are loose-fitting, lightweight, and light in colour. Dark colours absorb sunlight and the heat that comes with it, while lighter colours like white and pastels reflect it, keeping you cooler. When it comes to fabric, materials like cotton and linen are highly breathable, allowing air to circulate and sweat to evaporate. However, once cotton gets wet with sweat, it can be slow to dry. For more active walks, synthetic fabrics designed to wick moisture away from the skin can keep you more comfortable. Always complete your outfit with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for extra protection.
Staying Safe: Hydration and Warning Signs
Even with perfect planning, it's crucial to stay vigilant. Hydration is non-negotiable. Drink water before you feel thirsty—aim for a couple of glasses an hour or two before your walk, and carry a bottle with you to sip every 15-20 minutes. It is also important to recognize the warning signs of heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Symptoms of heat exhaustion can include dizziness, headache, nausea, and cool, moist skin. If you experience any of these, stop walking immediately, find a cool, shady spot, and rehydrate. Heatstroke is a medical emergency with symptoms like a flushed face, confusion, and a weak, rapid pulse. Being aware of these dangers is the final, and most important, part of planning for a walk in the heat.
