or a compact house, this surge of moisture has nowhere to go. Without adequate ventilation, the humidity level in a room can jump by 30%, creating an environment that is far from ideal. The World Health Organization recommends keeping indoor humidity between 40% and 60%. Drying laundry indoors can easily push those levels above 70%, creating the perfect conditions for problems to begin.
The Risks of Lingering Damp
This excess moisture isn't just uncomfortable; it's a direct invitation for mould, mildew, and dust mites to thrive. These unwelcome guests can cause visible damage, such as black spots on walls and ceilings, peeling paint, and warped window frames. But the invisible threats are even more concerning. Mould releases spores into the air that can trigger or worsen a range of health issues. Occupants of damp homes are at a higher risk for respiratory symptoms, asthma attacks, allergic reactions, and bronchitis. First, use an extra spin cycle on your washing machine to remove as much water as possible before hanging clothes. When you hang them, space the items out on the rack to improve airflow and speed up drying. Place the drying rack in a well-ventilated area, preferably near an open window or in a room with an extractor fan, like a bathroom. Avoid placing wet clothes directly on radiators, as this can block heat circulation and actually make the room more humid.
Consider a Dehumidifier
For those who frequently dry clothes indoors, especially in winter or during rainy seasons, a dehumidifier can be a game-changing appliance. A dehumidifier works by actively pulling moisture from the air, collecting it in a tank. Placing one near your drying rack can drastically speed up drying time, prevent musty odours, and keep your home's overall humidity at a healthy level. Many models even have a specific 'laundry mode' designed for this purpose. While it's an upfront investment, a dehumidifier is often cheaper to run than a tumble dryer and is gentler on delicate fabrics.
When Damp Is a Deeper Problem
While indoor drying is a common cause of high humidity, persistent dampness might signal a more serious issue. It's important to distinguish between condensation (caused by indoor moisture) and damp (caused by water entering the building from outside). Telltale signs of condensation include water droplets on windows and mould forming in corners or behind furniture. Structural damp, on the other hand, might appear as tide-like marks rising from the floor, isolated damp patches on walls that worsen after rain, or crumbling plaster.
