In a sun-drenched country like India, clothing colour is your first line of defence against the heat. The science is simple: dark colours absorb more light and convert it into heat, while light colours reflect it. Studies have shown the surface temperature
of a black shirt in direct sun can be significantly higher—up to 20°C—than a white one in the same conditions. For peak summer, white is the ultimate choice for staying cool as it reflects the most sunlight. Other effective options include pastels, beige, light grey, and sky blue. While dark clothes absorb more heat from the sun, they also absorb heat from your body. However, for them to have a cooling effect, the clothing must be loose-fitting to allow for airflow, a principle used by Bedouins in the desert. For most daily activities in direct sun, sticking to light-coloured, breathable fabrics is a much more reliable strategy.
The Professional Palette
In a professional setting, colour is a powerful form of non-verbal communication that can influence how you are perceived. Your choice of attire can signal authority, trustworthiness, or creativity before you even speak. Blue is a corporate favourite, often associated with calmness, stability, and reliability, making it ideal for client meetings or roles in finance and law. Practicality and Stain Resistance

While stark white is unforgiving and dark black can ironically highlight dust and lint, mid-tones are often the most practical. Colours like greige (a mix of grey and beige), taupe, and charcoal grey are excellent at camouflaging both light and dark stains. Deep, saturated colours like navy blue, dark brown, and chocolate are particularly adept at concealing dye-based spills like juice, coffee, or ink. Patterns can also be a secret weapon; they break up the solid surface of the fabric, making it harder for the eye to spot a stain. For parents or anyone prone to mishaps, choosing clothing in these forgiving hues can mean less stress and a longer life for your garments.
The Importance of Being Seen
In some situations, clothing colour is not a preference but a critical safety feature. High-visibility (or hi-vis) clothing is essential for anyone working near traffic or in low-light conditions, as well as for cyclists and runners. The goal is to stand out against any background. Standards like ANSI/ISEA 107 in the US and IS 15809:2018 in India specify which colours are most effective. The three globally approved fluorescent colours are yellow-green, orange-red, and red. These bright, fluorescent shades are easily discernible during the day. For night-time visibility, the clothing must also incorporate retroreflective materials that shine brightly when hit by headlights. Choosing a standard t-shirt in a bright colour is not enough; true safety wear is engineered for maximum conspicuity, a function where colour choice is a matter of life and death.
When Colour Affects Fabric
The process of dyeing a fabric can sometimes alter its inherent properties. Certain dyeing processes and finishing treatments can impact a fabric's breathability and texture. For example, some dyes might slightly fill the gaps between fibres, which can reduce airflow. While modern techniques like dye-sublimation infuse colour without clogging fabric pores, other methods that layer ink on the surface can create a barrier, trapping heat and moisture. This is why two shirts made from the same material but in different colours can sometimes feel different. Natural fibres like cotton are known to be highly absorbent, which allows them to take on permanent colour well while maintaining their breathability. While the effect is often minor, it's another reminder that colour is intrinsically linked to the performance and feel of your clothes.
