A Nationwide Effort to Manage the Rush
To accommodate the surge in passenger demand during the summer months, Indian Railways has announced a massive expansion of its special train services, scheduled to run until mid-July 2026. This initiative involves operating over 18,000 additional train trips
nationwide, a significant increase from the previous year. The plan is a proactive measure to manage the seasonal traffic caused by school holidays, festivals, and families travelling across the country. By adding these services, the railways aim to reduce waiting lists for popular routes, increase the availability of confirmed berths, and ensure a smoother travel experience for millions of passengers.
Key Zones and Routes with Extended Services
The extended services span nearly all major railway zones, with a significant focus on high-demand corridors. Western Railway has extended several weekly special trains connecting Mumbai with destinations like Banaras and Katihar through the end of July. Similarly, a superfast special service between Dadar and Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi will continue to operate until mid-July, enhancing connectivity between the two major metropolitan areas. In the south, Southern Railway has extended eight special train services, including the popular Chennai Egmore to Kanyakumari route, with additional trips scheduled for July and August. The East Coast Railway has also augmented several trains by adding extra coaches to meet the passenger rush on routes like Bhubaneswar-Bengaluru and Puri-Gunupur.
Focus on High-Demand Corridors
Central Railway is a major contributor to this effort, operating thousands of additional trips from hubs like Mumbai and Pune. These services connect Maharashtra with key destinations in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which see heavy passenger movement during the summer. North Western Railway is also playing a crucial role, running special trains until July 15 and adding coaches to long-distance services to manage the heavy passenger load. The special trains primarily connect major metro cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru with destinations that see a large influx of students and migrant workers returning home for the holidays.
What This Means for Travelers
For students returning from colleges and families planning their vacations, this announcement brings welcome flexibility and more travel options. The addition of thousands of trips significantly increases the chances of securing a confirmed ticket on high-demand routes, which are often sold out weeks in advance. Passengers can book tickets for these special trains through the official IRCTC website and at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. With many services already notified and open for booking, travelers are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance to take full advantage of the increased capacity. The deployment of these trains is expected to ease overcrowding on regular services, making for a more comfortable and convenient journey.
