Understanding the Kharif Season's Importance
The Kharif season, which aligns with the southwest monsoon from June to September, is the backbone of India's agriculture. It accounts for about half of the country's annual food grain production. Crops like rice, maize, soybean, cotton, and various pulses
are sown during this period, making the monsoon's performance directly tied to rural incomes and national food security. Nearly half of India's net sown area is rain-fed, meaning millions of farmers depend almost entirely on the timeliness and distribution of these seasonal rains for their livelihood. However, the 2026 monsoon has been anything but uniform, with its uneven spread becoming the single biggest concern for the season's outcome.
The Deficit Dilemma: Drought and Moisture Stress
A significant part of the country is wrestling with insufficient rainfall. As of mid-August 2026, large swathes of agricultural land were reported to be under drought stress due to rainfall deficits and depleting soil moisture. Regions in southern, eastern, and northeastern India are experiencing significant shortfalls. States like Bihar, Punjab, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh have seen rainfall well below normal levels. This moisture stress is critically timed, as crops like soybean, tur (pigeon pea), and maize enter their flowering and grain-filling stages. Prolonged dry spells at this point can severely stunt growth and reduce final yields, even if the overall seasonal rainfall figure looks respectable on paper. The initial delay in the monsoon's onset, attributed to El Niño conditions, also meant that sowing was lagging from the start, particularly for rice, soybean, and some pulses.
The Other Extreme: Floods and Waterlogging
Simultaneously, some areas are dealing with the exact opposite problem: too much rain in too little time. Heavy rainfall has led to flood-like situations in parts of states like Odisha and West Bengal, and has caused widespread devastation in Assam. While central India's rainfall deficit has largely been erased, this has often been due to intense bursts of rain rather than steady, beneficial showers. Such events lead to waterlogging in fields, which can be just as damaging as a drought. Waterlogged soil suffocates plant roots, washes away essential nutrients, and can cause fungal diseases, posing a particular threat to standing paddy, cotton, and vegetable crops. In Assam, for instance, floods in July and August submerged tens of thousands of hectares of cropland, disrupting the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.
The Uneven Spread: A Deceptive National Average
Experts emphasize that the all-India rainfall average, which shows a cumulative deficit, masks these sharp and dangerous regional variations. Some districts have received heavy downpours followed by long dry spells, a pattern that depletes soil moisture rapidly and offers little relief to crops. This year illustrates why seasonal totals alone don't determine agricultural success. The key factor is distribution—whether the rain arrives at the right time and in the right quantity during the crop's critical growth stages. As of early August, a large number of districts crucial for producing rice, soybean, and tur were running significant rainfall deficits, highlighting the disconnect between national averages and the reality on the ground.
Impact on Key Crops and the Economy
The varied risks are affecting different crops in specific ways. Rice acreage is down, with many key paddy-growing districts facing a rain deficit. Pulses and oilseeds like soybean also show a decline in sown area compared to last year. While there have been gains in some crops like urad dal and sunflower, the overall picture for major staples remains a concern. This situation has broader economic implications. A shortfall in the production of essential commodities could tighten domestic supplies and potentially fuel food inflation. It also puts pressure on reservoir levels, which are reportedly lower than last year, affecting water availability for the upcoming Rabi (winter) crop season.
