The Big Picture: Why 418 New Services?
Central Railway has announced a comprehensive plan to operate 418 special train services to accommodate the surge in passenger traffic during the upcoming festive season, which includes Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja. This initiative aims to provide
confirmed berths to as many travellers as possible, clearing the heavy waitlists typically seen during this period. The services will run on special charges and are scheduled primarily between October and November 2026. According to officials, the plan is designed to facilitate smooth and convenient travel for passengers heading to their hometowns to celebrate with family.
Key Hubs and Destinations
The new services will originate from major hubs within the Central Railway zone, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Mumbai, and stations in Pune, Hadapsar, and Nagpur. These trains will connect Maharashtra with a wide array of destinations across the country. Key routes are focused on high-demand corridors, particularly those connecting to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, such as Gorakhpur, Mau, and Banaras. Additionally, services will run to cities in the south, including Chennai and Bengaluru, and other parts of Maharashtra like Latur and Kolhapur, ensuring wide-ranging connectivity.
Highlight: Major Routes to North India
A significant portion of the plan focuses on easing the rush towards North India. A total of 64 daily special services will run between CSMT Mumbai and Gorakhpur from October 16 to November 16. In addition, another 64 daily services are scheduled between Hadapsar (Pune) and Gorakhpur. These trains will stop at major intermediate stations like Nashik, Bhusaval, Itarsi, Bhopal, Jhansi, Kanpur Central, and Lucknow, catering to passengers across a vast network. Bi-weekly services between LTT and Mau will also provide crucial connectivity to eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Enhanced Connectivity to South India and Within Maharashtra
The plan isn't just focused on the north. Travellers heading south will benefit from 12 weekly AC special services between CSMT and Chennai Beach, and 14 weekly AC specials between CSMT and SMVT Bengaluru. Within Maharashtra, Central Railway has introduced 26 bi-weekly services between CSMT and Latur, and 12 weekly superfast specials connecting CSMT with Nagpur. A weekly service between CSMT and Kolhapur is also part of the schedule.
Booking Information and Travel Rules
Reservations for these special trains opened on September 27, 2026. Passengers can book tickets through all Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and the official IRCTC website and mobile app. It's important to book early as demand is expected to be extremely high. Furthermore, travellers should be aware that Central Railway has initiated an intensive ticket-checking drive from October 1. Passengers, especially those on shared tickets or using concessions, must carry valid, original ID proof. Failure to produce ID can result in being treated as a ticketless traveller and fined accordingly.
A Note on CSMT Redevelopment
Travellers using CSMT should also be aware of ongoing infrastructure work. Central Railway has imposed a 75-day traffic and power block from October 1 to December 15 for the station's redevelopment project. This block affects platforms 14 and 15 and has led to the short-termination of eight long-distance trains at Dadar or Thane. While the 418 special services are planned to manage the festive rush, it's wise to check the status of your specific train for any last-minute platform changes or adjustments due to this ongoing work.
