Secure Your Luggage and Valuables
Peace of mind is paramount on an overnight journey. One of the most common concerns for travellers is luggage safety. Always carry a sturdy lock and chain to secure your bags to the loops provided under the lower berths. This simple step acts as a strong
deterrent. For your valuables like your phone, wallet, and documents, a small daypack or a fanny pack that you can keep close to you, even while sleeping, is a wise investment. Never leave your main luggage unlocked, and avoid placing small, valuable items near the open windows where they can be easily snatched.
Build a Personal Comfort Cocoon
Sleeper class does not provide bedding, so you need to bring your own. An inflatable travel pillow can be a neck-saver, packing down to a small size. A lightweight blanket, shawl, or a sleeping bag liner will keep you warm and cozy, as nights can get chilly, and also provides a clean layer between you and the berth. An eye mask and earplugs are non-negotiable for light sleepers; they block out the constant light and noise, helping you get some real rest amidst the activity of the coach.
Pack a Hygiene and Sanitation Kit
Maintaining hygiene can be a challenge, but a well-stocked kit makes all the difference. Wet wipes and hand sanitiser are absolute essentials for freshening up and cleaning your hands before eating. It is always a good idea to carry your own toilet paper or tissues, as they are rarely available in the train washrooms. A small toiletry bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and soap strips will help you feel human after a long journey. A small cloth can also be useful for wiping down your berth and window area before you settle in.
Stay Powered and Entertained
While charging points are available, they are few and often in high demand. A fully charged power bank is your best friend on a long journey, ensuring your phone and other devices don't run out of battery. For entertainment, don't rely on spotty mobile networks. Before you leave, download movies, podcasts, or a music playlist to your device. A good book or an e-reader is another excellent way to pass the time as the diverse landscapes of India roll by your window.
Smart Snacking and Hydration
While station vendors and pantry cars offer food, having your own stash of snacks and water is a smart move. Carry a reusable water bottle that you can refill at stations. Pack non-messy, dry snacks like biscuits, nuts, or homemade items to munch on between meals. This not only saves money but also gives you a reliable option if you are particular about food or get hungry at odd hours when nothing is available.
Dress for Comfort and Climate
Your travel outfit should prioritise comfort. Opt for loose-fitting, breathable clothes. Layering is key, as the temperature can fluctuate. A t-shirt, comfortable trousers, and a hoodie or jacket will allow you to adapt. Also, pack a pair of flip-flops or slippers that are easy to slip on and off, especially for those late-night trips to the washroom. This prevents you from having to fumble with shoes in the dark.
