The Cliffside Office
Forget coworking spaces in crowded cities. In Varkala, a coastal town in Kerala, the office is a cliffside cafe with panoramic views of the ocean. For years, this town was a destination for pilgrims and tourists seeking a quieter alternative to Goa. Today,
it has quietly transformed into a haven for digital nomads and remote workers from across India and the world. The main draw is its unique geography: it's the only place in southern Kerala where dramatic cliffs stand adjacent to the Arabian Sea, creating a stunning natural workspace. Unlike the party-centric vibe of other beach towns, Varkala offers a more relaxed, wellness-focused atmosphere, with yoga shalas and Ayurvedic centres dotted along its famous North Cliff.
From Dawn Patrol to Deep Work
The daily routine for many here is a study in balance. The day often begins not with an alarm clock, but with the call of the waves. Varkala’s sandy beach breaks and warm waters are ideal for beginners, and a number of local surf schools have popped up to cater to the demand. A typical 1.5-hour lesson costs around ₹1,500, offering a refreshing and physical start to the day. After a session on the water at beaches like Papanasam or the quieter Black Beach, it’s time for breakfast at a local spot before the workday begins. This routine, blending invigorating physical activity with focused professional life, is the core of Varkala's appeal. It’s a lifestyle designed around well-being, where work fits into life, not the other way around.
Connectivity, Cafes, and Community
The most critical question for any remote worker is about the internet. Surprisingly, Varkala delivers. A growing number of cafes have invested in reliable Wi-Fi, understanding the needs of their new clientele. Places like AUM Cafe, Caffe Italiano, and Rabbit Cafe are known hubs for laptop workers, offering not just decent connectivity but also power outlets and a welcoming atmosphere. While speeds of 10-30 Mbps are common, most veterans recommend a solid backup plan. A local Jio or Airtel SIM card with a generous data plan is considered essential to navigate occasional power cuts or unstable connections. Beyond the infrastructure, a sense of community has developed organically. It's common to see the same faces in the cafes each day, leading to natural networking, shared weekend trips, and a support system far from a traditional office.
The Reality Beyond the Instagram Post
Of course, the lifestyle isn't without its challenges. The idyllic scene is highly dependent on the season. The golden window is from October to February, when the weather is pleasant and the sea is calm. During the monsoon season (roughly May to September), heavy rains can disrupt both surfing plans and internet connectivity. While Varkala is more affordable than major Indian metros, costs can add up. A monthly budget for a comfortable stay in a private room, scooter rental, and a mix of dining out can range from ₹45,000 to ₹55,000. The biggest challenge, however, can be discipline. With the beach just a short walk away and a constant holiday vibe in the air, the temptation to close the laptop and head for a sunset view is a daily test of a remote worker's resolve.
