Why You Must Verify Your Voter Details
Possessing a Voter ID card, also known as the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC), is not enough to guarantee your right to vote. Your name must appear correctly on the current electoral roll for your constituency. Small errors like a misspelled name,
an old address, or an incorrect date of birth can lead to you being turned away at the polling booth. With elections approaching, taking a few minutes to audit your details is a crucial step. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has made this process incredibly simple and accessible through various digital platforms that you can use directly on your mobile smartphone. Verifying your details ensures your information is accurate, your polling station is correctly assigned, and you are empowered to participate fully in the democratic process without any last-minute surprises.
Method 1: The Voter Helpline App
The most comprehensive tool provided by the ECI is the 'Voter Helpline' app, available for both Android and iOS devices. This app is a one-stop-shop for all voter-related services. After downloading and installing the app from your phone's app store, you will need to register with your mobile number. Once logged in, you can access a range of features. The primary function for auditing your details is 'Search in Electoral Roll'. You can search for your name using your personal details (name, father's name, age, etc.), by scanning the barcode on your existing voter ID, or by directly entering your EPIC number. The app will display your complete voter record, including your name, polling station, and serial number. You can even download a digital photo voter slip.
Method 2: The Voters' Services Portal (VSP)
For those who prefer using a web browser on their smartphone, the official Voters' Services Portal (voters.eci.gov.in) is the go-to resource. This portal is designed to be mobile-friendly. On the homepage, you'll find the option 'Search in Electoral Roll'. Clicking this will give you two primary ways to check your details: 'Search by EPIC Number' or 'Search by Details'. If you have your Voter ID card handy, using the EPIC number is the fastest way. Simply enter the 10-digit alphanumeric code, select your state, and complete the captcha to view your information. If you don't know your EPIC number, you can use the 'Search by Details' tab, where you'll need to enter information like your name, father's/husband's name, age, and constituency.
Method 3: Checking Your Status Via SMS
If you have limited internet connectivity, you can still verify your details using a simple SMS service. The ECI provides a helpline number, 1950, for this purpose. To check your voter registration information, you can send an SMS with the text 'ECI' followed by a space and your 10-digit EPIC number to 1950. For example, if your EPIC is ABC1234567, you would send 'ECI ABC1234567' to 1950. You will receive an SMS in reply containing your details as they appear on the electoral roll, including your name, part number, and polling station information. This service is a quick and effective way to get confirmation without needing a data connection.
What To Do If Your Details Are Incorrect
If you discover an error in your details or find that your name is missing, don't panic. Both the Voter Helpline App and the Voters' Services Portal allow you to submit forms for corrections or new registration. Form 8 is used for all corrections, such as changing your address, correcting your name or age, or requesting a replacement EPIC. If you are not registered at all, you can fill out Form 6 for new registration. After submitting any form, you will receive a reference ID. You can use this ID on the app or portal under the 'Track Application Status' section to monitor the progress of your request. It is vital to address these issues well before an election is announced to ensure the changes are reflected in time.
