What the IMD Forecast Reveals
The southwest monsoon, which had a somewhat subdued start in early June across parts of Karnataka, is now set to intensify significantly. According to the latest bulletins from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), widespread rainfall is expected
across the state, with a particular focus on the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada. The weather systems are drawing a large amount of moisture from the Arabian Sea, creating the perfect conditions for a sustained period of rain. While the monsoon's arrival has been uneven this year, with some inland areas receiving more rain than the coast initially, this pattern is now expected to reverse dramatically as the sea-driven monsoon flow strengthens.
Alerts Issued and Timeline
The IMD has issued specific alerts for the coastal region. A 'Yellow Alert' was in place for the coastal districts from June 27 to June 30, indicating a need to be updated. However, as the system intensifies, an 'Orange Alert' has been issued for coastal and Malenadu districts effective until July 2, warning residents to be prepared for heavy rainfall. The forecast indicates that rainfall intensity will increase from June 30 onwards, with predictions of 'very heavy rain' for Coastal Karnataka on July 1 and July 2. This escalation suggests that downpours could be significant enough to cause disruptions. Similar advisories for heavy rain are also in place for neighboring regions like Konkan and Goa.
Potential Impact on Coastal Life
Heavy and continuous rainfall brings several challenges for residents in the coastal belt. Authorities have warned of the potential for waterlogging in low-lying areas, localized flooding, and disruptions to transportation. During previous intense spells this month, parts of National Highways have caved in, and urban areas in Mangaluru and Udupi have experienced significant waterlogging. The upcoming spell could see a repeat of these issues. Strong surface winds, with speeds of 30-40 kmph, are also expected to accompany the rain, which could pose a risk to weak structures and trees.
Special Advisory for Fishermen
The conditions in the Arabian Sea are expected to be particularly hazardous. Even with less rainfall at times, the sea has remained turbulent due to strong monsoon winds. The IMD and the Ministry of Home Affairs have issued advisories warning of squally winds with speeds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph or higher, along the Karnataka coast. These conditions make fishing operations extremely dangerous. A seasonal fishing ban for mechanized boats is already in effect, but traditional fishermen and those operating near the shore are also strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid venturing into the sea until conditions improve.

Residents in low-lying or flood-prone areas should remain especially vigilant and be prepared to move to safer locations if necessary.
