The Digital Traffic Jam
The Indian Railways' online ticketing system is one of the busiest digital platforms in the world. In the twelve months between June 2025 and June 2026, a staggering 65.08 crore reserved tickets were booked, with nearly 89% of those transactions happening
online. This massive shift to digital has put immense pressure on the underlying infrastructure. The Passenger Reservation System (PRS), which has roots stretching back four decades, was struggling to keep pace. For years, passengers have battled system crashes, lagging response times, and the particularly stressful experience of trying to book a ticket during the Tatkal window, when millions log on simultaneously. The previous system could handle around 32,000 bookings per minute, a number that was simply no match for the country's surging demand.
A Five-Fold Leap in Capacity
In response to these challenges, Indian Railways has initiated a phased rollout of a next-generation, cloud-based PRS. Developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), this isn't just a minor tweak; it's a complete overhaul of the system's core. The new platform is designed to handle over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute — a nearly five-fold increase from the previous capacity. The ability to handle passenger enquiries, such as checking seat availability or PNR status, is also getting a monumental boost. The system will be able to process over 40 lakh enquiries per minute, a tenfold jump from the previous capacity of around 4 lakh. This upgrade represents one of the most significant technological advancements in the railway's recent history.
What This Means for Passengers
For the average passenger, these numbers translate into a less frustrating and more reliable booking experience. The primary goal is to significantly reduce the chances of the website or app crashing during peak hours, especially during the high-stakes Tatkal booking window. With a much larger capacity to handle simultaneous users, the frantic rush for tickets should become a smoother process. The transition has already begun, with a new beta version of the IRCTC website launched on July 15, 2026, as part of the new system. Early results are promising, with railways officials noting an improvement in the speed of Tatkal bookings completed within the first few crucial minutes.
A Gradual and Stable Transition
Indian Railways is taking a cautious and strategic approach to the rollout, which began in August 2026. Instead of a risky, one-time switch, the migration to the new PRS is happening in phases. Trains are being moved to the upgraded system gradually, allowing engineers to test its performance and stability under varying levels of traffic. This 'slow and steady' approach is designed to minimise any disruption to a service that operates around the clock and is a lifeline for millions. Beyond just speed, the new system is also designed to be more flexible and reliable, with a user-friendly and multilingual interface to better serve a diverse population of travellers.
More Than Just a Tech Upgrade
This technological overhaul is part of a wider series of reforms aimed at improving the entire ticketing experience and ensuring fairness. In recent times, Railways has also introduced other significant changes. The Advance Reservation Period (ARP) was reduced from 120 days to 60 days to better reflect actual travel planning and curb speculative booking by agents. Furthermore, measures like Aadhaar-authenticated Tatkal bookings and OTP-based verification have been implemented to crack down on the use of bots and unauthorised agents who often sweep up tickets in bulk. Together, these reforms and the new PRS represent a comprehensive strategy to make train ticket booking more efficient and equitable for all.
