The Shifting Cost of Your Passport
Your passport is the first key to any international journey, and its associated costs have recently changed. As of July 2026, the fees for Indian passports have been revised for the first time in over a decade. The cost for a new or renewed 36-page passport is now
₹2,500, up from ₹1,500. If you opt for a larger 60-page booklet, the price is now ₹3,500. For travellers in a hurry, the Tatkal (expedited) service comes with a higher price tag. A 36-page Tatkal passport now costs ₹5,000, while the 60-page version is ₹6,000. Planning ahead is crucial, as normal processing can take several weeks, while Tatkal aims to deliver within a few working days. Remember to factor these essential costs into your initial trip-planning phase, as many countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months from your date of travel.
Navigating the Visa Fee Maze
Once your passport is sorted, the next financial hurdle is the visa. Fees vary dramatically depending on your destination. For popular long-haul spots, the costs are significant. A standard US tourist visa can total around ₹14,700 ($185), while a UK short-term visa is approximately ₹16,196 (£115). A trip to Australia requires a visitor visa costing about ₹13,500 (AUD 200). For those dreaming of a European tour, a Schengen visa fee for adults is now €90 (around ₹8,300). However, this is not the final price. You must also pay a mandatory service fee to VFS Global, the outsourcing partner for most embassies, which can range from approximately ₹1,900 to over ₹3,100. This brings the realistic cost of a single Schengen visa application to between ₹11,000 and ₹15,000, and this fee is non-refundable even if your application is rejected.
The Rise of E-Visas and New Authorisations
While some visa costs are high, many countries offer more affordable and simpler e-visa or visa-on-arrival options for Indian travellers. Destinations in Southeast Asia like Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore offer e-visas that typically cost between ₹2,500 and ₹3,000. Japan remains an exceptionally affordable option, with its visa fee for Indians holding steady at ₹500, bringing the total with service charges to just ₹1,300. However, travellers should be aware of new systems being implemented. Europe is introducing the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), expected to be operational in late 2026. While ETIAS is for travellers from visa-waiver countries and does not currently apply to Indian passport holders requiring a Schengen visa, it's part of a global trend toward digitised pre-travel clearance that often comes with a fee. Staying updated on these changing requirements is key to avoiding surprises.
A Smart Traveller's Checklist for Document Budgeting
To navigate this new landscape of travel costs, a strategic approach is essential. First, check your passport's expiry date at the very beginning of your planning process. Renewing it well in advance saves you from paying hefty Tatkal fees. Second, research the specific visa requirements and total costs for your chosen destination as soon as you decide where to go. Include the base visa fee, any biometric charges, and mandatory service center fees (like VFS Global's) in your budget. For a family of four travelling to Europe, these document costs alone can easily exceed ₹50,000. Third, factor in the cost of mandatory travel insurance, which is a prerequisite for Schengen visa applications and can cost between ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 for a two-week trip. Finally, create a separate 'Documentation' category in your travel budget spreadsheet. This ensures these foundational costs are accounted for from day one, rather than becoming a stressful last-minute expense.
