Start with Your Airline
Your first and most reliable source of information is always the airline you are flying with. Download your airline’s official app on your smartphone before you even leave for the airport. These apps are designed to give you real-time updates, including
gate changes, delays, and cancellations. Make sure you have enabled push notifications for your trip. Alternatively, the airline's website is your next best bet. Most have a dedicated 'Flight Status' section where you can enter your flight number or route to get the latest information. If you've provided your email or phone number during booking, airlines will often proactively send you alerts about any changes to your itinerary.
Use Third-Party Flight Trackers
For a broader, more comprehensive view, independent flight tracking services are invaluable. Websites and apps like FlightAware, Flightradar24, and FlightStats provide real-time data on flights across the globe. These services often pull data from multiple sources, including air traffic control, giving you a detailed picture of not just your flight but also air traffic at your departure and arrival airports. Some advanced apps like Flighty can even predict delays before the airline officially announces them by tracking the location of your inbound aircraft. This can give you a crucial head start in making alternative plans. These apps are excellent for seeing the bigger picture, like widespread weather delays affecting an entire region.
Check the Airport's Website
Don't forget the airports themselves. Both your departure and arrival airport websites will have live boards showing the status of all flights. This can be a great way to cross-reference the information you're getting from your airline. If the airline app says your flight is on time but the airport website shows a delay, it’s a sign to seek clarification. Airport websites are particularly useful once you're already at the terminal, as they will also list gate information, which can sometimes change at the last minute.
Leverage Social Media
In an age of instant information, airlines frequently use social media, especially X (formerly Twitter), to broadcast major announcements about weather waivers, widespread cancellations, or system outages. Following your airline's official account can provide quick updates. While you can ask for help via direct message, some data suggests you might get a quicker response on Instagram. However, for official status updates, the airline's main feed is your best bet. Remember to look for the most recent posts, as situations can change rapidly during a major disruption.
Know Your Rights During a Delay
Knowing your flight's status is only half the battle; the other half is knowing what you’re entitled to. In India, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has a Passenger Charter that outlines your rights. For example, if your flight is significantly delayed, airlines are generally required to provide you with meals and refreshments. If a delay is very long or leads to an overnight stay, the rules may entitle you to accommodation. However, it's crucial to note that these compensations often do not apply to disruptions caused by events beyond the airline's control, such as severe weather or air traffic control restrictions. If your flight is cancelled with little notice, you are typically entitled to a refund or an alternative flight.
