Monsoon Makes its Grand Entrance
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that as of June 24, 2026, the Southwest Monsoon has advanced into parts of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. [15] In Gujarat, the monsoon arrived about a week later than its typical June 15 onset date, covering
southern districts like Surat, Valsad, Navsari, and Dang. [8, 9] Heavy rainfall was recorded in several talukas, with Sagbara in the Narmada district receiving 85mm. [8] Similarly, Madhya Pradesh, which was facing a significant rainfall deficit, is seeing the monsoon enter its southern and eastern districts, with alerts for rain issued in over 40 districts. [13, 15] Favourable conditions are expected to help the monsoon cover more parts of both states in the coming days. [7, 9]
A Tale of Two Realities: Relief and Disruption
The arrival of the rains has been met with widespread relief. For weeks, both states have been grappling with intense heatwaves. On Wednesday, Ahmedabad recorded a maximum temperature of 40.4 degrees Celsius, 2.5 degrees above normal. [8] The showers have brought a welcome dip in temperatures, breaking the oppressive heat. [13] However, the downpour has also brought familiar monsoon challenges. In cities like Ahmedabad, which had identified 149 potential waterlogging spots before the season, the heavy spells threaten to cause significant traffic disruption and flooding in low-lying areas. [19, 24] The IMD has issued warnings for thunderstorms and gusty winds, advising caution. [7, 18]
A Critical Lifeline for Agriculture
The monsoon's arrival is arguably most critical for the region's farmers. Both states were facing significant rainfall deficits, which delayed the sowing of key Kharif crops. [11, 13] In Madhya Pradesh, the deficit stood at 53 percent below normal, impacting the sowing of soybean and other crops which require at least four inches of rainfall to begin. [13] The nationwide Kharif sowing was off to a slow start due to the monsoon's sluggish progression, with the total area sown as of early June being slightly lower than the previous year. [16, 20] These fresh rains are a crucial lifeline, providing the necessary moisture for farmers to accelerate planting of rice, cotton, and oilseeds, which are vital for India's food security and rural economy. [16, 23]
What the Forecast Holds
According to the IMD, conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to advance further across central India over the next few days. [7] Heavy rainfall is likely to continue in parts of East and West Madhya Pradesh. [7] For Gujarat, forecasts indicate light to moderate rainfall over the next few days, with the possibility of thunderstorms and strong surface winds in several districts of the South Gujarat region and Saurashtra. [8, 22] While the initial phase has been powerful, the overall performance of the monsoon remains a key watchpoint, as the IMD's long-range forecast had projected a season with rainfall at 90% of the Long Period Average, bordering on deficient. [20, 23] For now, residents and authorities in both states are bracing for an active week of rain.
