Know the Calendar and the Clock
The first rule of festive travel is to plan well ahead. This year, the main day for Dussehra falls on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, while Diwali will be celebrated on Sunday, November 8, 2026. Indian Railways has revised its Advance Reservation Period (ARP)
to 60 days, excluding the day of the journey. This means you need to mark your calendar and be ready to book exactly two months before your travel date. For a journey on November 8, bookings would open in early September. The booking window for the general quota opens at 8:00 AM. Seats on high-demand routes can vanish within minutes, so being logged in and ready at that exact moment is crucial.
Master the Art of Tatkal
If you miss the 60-day window, the Tatkal scheme is your next best bet. Bookings open one day before the train's departure from its originating station. Remember the magic numbers: 10:00 AM for all AC classes (AC Chair Car, 3A, 2A, 1A) and 11:00 AM for non-AC classes (Sleeper, Second Seating). Success in Tatkal booking is a game of seconds. To gain an edge, use IRCTC's 'Master List' feature. This allows you to pre-save passenger details like name, age, and ID proof, which you can then auto-fill during the booking process, saving precious time. Also, ensure you have a fast and stable internet connection.
Use Faster Payment Methods
One of the most common points of failure during a high-traffic booking is the payment gateway. By the time you enter credit card details and wait for an OTP, the tickets are often gone. The solution is to use faster payment methods. The IRCTC e-Wallet is an excellent option; load it with sufficient funds before the booking window opens. UPI is another quick and reliable method that often completes the transaction much faster than traditional net banking or card payments.
Don't Ignore the VIKALP Scheme
Many travellers overlook a useful feature called the Alternate Train Accommodation Scheme, or VIKALP. When booking a waitlisted ticket, you can opt into VIKALP at no extra cost. If your ticket remains waitlisted even after the chart is prepared, Indian Railways will automatically try to accommodate you in any other train with available seats travelling on the same route. While it doesn't guarantee a confirmed berth, it significantly increases your chances by considering multiple trains instead of just one. Once you are moved to an alternate train, you cannot switch back.
Track Festival Special Trains
To handle the massive surge in demand, Indian Railways announces hundreds of 'Puja Special' or 'Festival Special' trains every year. These services often run on the busiest routes, connecting major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru to destinations in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and other states. Keep a close eye on the official IRCTC website and app, as well as railway news updates, for these announcements. These special trains often have a shorter advance booking period, so you need to act fast once they are announced.
Consider Premium Tatkal and Current Booking
If your journey is absolutely essential and you're willing to spend more, the Premium Tatkal (PT) quota is an option. It opens at the same time as the regular Tatkal quota but uses a dynamic pricing model, where fares increase with demand. Because it's more expensive, the competition is usually lower, improving your chances of securing a confirmed ticket. As a final resort, there's 'current booking', which opens after the first chart is prepared (usually about 4 hours before departure) and allows you to book any remaining vacant seats online or at the counter until 30 minutes before the train leaves.
