From Transit Hubs to City Centres
Indian Railways is in the midst of a monumental transformation, spearheaded by initiatives like the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which aims to redevelop over 1,300 stations across the country. The vision extends far beyond a simple clean-up. The goal
is to reimagine stations as 'City Centres' — integrated complexes that blend travel with leisure, business, and daily life. This involves upgrading buildings with modern designs inspired by local heritage, creating spacious air-conditioned concourses, and adding amenities like food courts, retail kiosks, executive lounges, and even children's play areas. The focus is on creating a seamless and comfortable experience, making the time spent at a station a pleasant part of the journey rather than a stressful necessity. Accessibility for all, including Divyangjan (persons with disabilities), is a core component, with new ramps, lifts, and tactile paving being installed.
The Gandhinagar Capital Model
Among the first and most stunning examples of this new vision is the Gandhinagar Capital Railway Station in Gujarat. Redeveloped and inaugurated in 2021, it set a new benchmark. The most talked-about feature is the 318-room, five-star luxury hotel built directly above the railway tracks, a first of its kind in India. This was designed to cater to delegates visiting the nearby Mahatma Mandir convention centre, effectively turning the station into a hospitality hub. Beyond the hotel, the station boasts a prayer hall, a sprawling transit area with seating for hundreds, modern art, and a facade with programmable thematic lighting. The entire structure was built with green building principles and is fully accessible for passengers with disabilities.
Bhopal's Airport-Inspired Overhaul
Following Gandhinagar's lead, the Rani Kamalapati Railway Station in Bhopal (formerly Habibganj) became the first to be redeveloped under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Often compared to an airport, the station features a large, air-conditioned open concourse where passengers can wait before descending to their platforms, separating arriving and departing crowds. The station is equipped with escalators, lifts, VIP lounges, dormitories for both men and women, and even private couple rooms. A 24/7 food court, retail shops, and tourism information kiosks ensure that travellers have everything they need. The management has also focused on convenience, offering porter services and battery-operated cars for the elderly and those with mobility issues.
Bengaluru's Fully-AC Terminal
In South India, the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru stands out as the country's first fully centrally air-conditioned railway terminal. Inaugurated in 2022, its modern architecture and passenger-first design were modelled after the city's international airport. The terminal can handle a daily footfall of 50,000 passengers across its seven platforms. It features a spacious waiting hall, a VIP lounge, a food court, and a digital real-time passenger information system. QR codes placed around the station provide access to sign language videos, enhancing accessibility. The project also emphasized multimodal connectivity, with ample parking for cars, bikes, and auto-rickshaws, and integration with local bus services.
The Future of Rail Travel
These flagship stations are just the beginning. Projects are underway across the nation, including at major hubs like New Delhi Railway Station, which is being redeveloped to feature iconic twin domes, multi-modal transit hubs, and advanced AI-enabled security systems. The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme continues to identify and upgrade hundreds of smaller stations, bringing improved facades, better platforms, and modern amenities to towns and cities nationwide. For the modern Indian traveller, this means wait times are no longer spent on crowded, uncomfortable platforms. Instead, they can shop, enjoy a meal, relax in a comfortable lounge, or even check into a hotel, fundamentally transforming the entire experience of train travel from a utility into a lifestyle.
