A multi-day train journey across India is an adventure. The rhythmic sway of the carriage and the ever-changing landscapes offer a unique travel experience. But comfort is key, and smart packing is what separates a tiring trip from a relaxing one.
Luggage and Organisation
The
foundation of efficient packing is choosing the right luggage. Opt for a durable trolley bag or a comfortable backpack that you can manage on your own through crowded stations. Since your main luggage may be stowed away, a smaller daypack or crossbody bag is crucial for keeping essentials like your wallet, phone, tickets, and medications with you at all times. Using packing cubes can be a game-changer. They help compartmentalise your belongings, making it easy to find what you need without unpacking your entire bag in a narrow aisle. Segregate items by type: one cube for clothes, another for electronics, and so on.
Comfortable Clothing and Bedding
Train compartments can have fluctuating temperatures, with the AC being surprisingly effective. Packing in layers is the best strategy. Think breathable cotton t-shirts, comfortable trousers or leggings, and a warm jacket, fleece, or shawl. For overnight journeys, especially in AC coaches, your own light blanket or a travel sheet can provide extra warmth and a feeling of personal hygiene. A neck pillow and an eye mask are indispensable for getting quality rest in an upright or semi-reclined seat. Also, pack a pair of slip-on shoes or slippers for easy movement within the coach.
Hygiene and Personal Care
A well-stocked toiletry kit is a must for staying fresh. Include travel-sized versions of your toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash, and deodorant. Hand sanitiser and wet wipes are non-negotiable for quick clean-ups and wiping down surfaces. Given the conditions of train washrooms, carrying your own toilet paper roll or tissues is highly recommended. Lip balm and a small moisturiser can combat the dry air in AC compartments. Keep everything in a waterproof pouch to prevent leaks from spoiling your other belongings.
Food, Snacks, and Hydration
While pantry cars and station vendors are available, packing your own food gives you control over hygiene and taste. For longer journeys, consider carrying some homemade, long-lasting items like thepla, stuffed parathas, or lemon rice. Nonperishable snacks like nuts, biscuits, granola bars, and roasted snacks are perfect for munching between meals. Readytoeat meal packs that only require hot water can be a lifesaver. Most importantly, carry a reusable water bottle and keep it filled to stay hydrated throughout your journey.
Safety and Security
Personal security is paramount on a shared journey. Always use a good quality lock for your main luggage. When you leave your seat, keep your valuables in a small bag that stays on your person. If you're sleeping on a lower berth, be extra mindful of your belongings. Booking a top bunk can sometimes offer a greater sense of security for you and your bags. It's also wise to have photocopies of your important documents or digital copies saved on your phone.
Entertainment and Electronics
Long journeys can get monotonous, especially after dark. Ensure your phone, tablet, or ereader is fully charged and loaded with books, movies, or podcasts. A reliable power bank is an absolute essential, as charging points on trains can be few, occupied, or nonfunctional. A pair of headphones or earplugs is crucial for blocking out noise when you want to rest or enjoy your media without disturbing others. For a more traditional pastime, a book or a pack of cards can be great companions.
