The Biggest Change: End of Visa-Free Entry
The most significant update for Indian travellers is the end of the 60-day visa-free entry scheme. This policy, which was in place until May 2026, allowed for simple, hassle-free entry. Now, Indian passport holders have been moved back to the Visa on
Arrival (VoA) category. This means that instead of simply getting a stamp upon landing, travellers must now go through a formal visa process at the airport. This change is part of a broader revision of Thailand's immigration policies aimed at managing tourism and enhancing security.
Your New Arrival Checklist: Documents are Key
To ensure a smooth entry, the Embassy of India in Bangkok has issued a detailed advisory. All travellers must now be prepared to present a comprehensive set of documents at immigration. This includes a passport with at least six months of validity, a confirmed return flight ticket, and proof of hotel bookings for the entire duration of the stay. Immigration officers may also ask for a clear day-by-day travel itinerary. It is crucial that each member of a travelling group carries their own set of these documents individually.
Proof of Funds: The Cash Requirement is Back
A major point of emphasis in the new guidelines is the requirement to show proof of sufficient funds. Travellers using the Visa on Arrival facility must be prepared to show at least 20,000 Thai Baht per person in cash, which is approximately ₹58,000. This is not a new rule, but enforcement has become much stricter. Immigration officers may conduct random checks, and failure to provide proof of funds can lead to delays or even denial of entry. It is advisable to carry this amount in cash, as credit card statements alone may not be sufficient during these on-the-spot checks.
The Mandatory Digital Step: Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)
One of the most frequently missed steps by tourists is the mandatory Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC). This is an online form that must be completed within 72 hours before arriving in Thailand. The old paper-based TM6 arrival form has been completely discontinued. After submitting the TDAC form online through the official immigration portal, you will receive a QR code. This code must be saved on your phone and presented at the immigration counter. Forgetting this step can cause significant delays at the airport.
Understanding the Visa on Arrival (VoA) Process
The Visa on Arrival allows for a stay of up to 15 days, which covers most tourist itineraries. The process involves filling out a VoA application form, providing a passport-sized photograph, and paying a fee of 2,000 THB, which should be paid in Thai currency. To speed up the process, travellers can pre-fill the VoA form online before their flight. It is also important to note that the VoA is for tourism purposes only. The Indian Embassy has specifically warned against using a tourist visa to seek employment, as it violates local laws.
