The One Rule: Cleanse, Then Cleanse Again
If there's one non-negotiable rule for monsoon skincare, it is this: keep your skin impeccably clean. The combination of high humidity, sweat, and environmental pollutants creates a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. This leads to everything
from acne and blackheads to more serious fungal infections. The solution isn't just a quick splash of water. It means adopting a dedicated cleansing routine. For many, this is the perfect season to try double cleansing in the evening. Start with an oil-based cleanser to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum. Follow up with a gentle, foaming, non-soap cleanser to wash away any remaining residue. This ensures your pores are truly clean without stripping your skin of its natural moisture barrier, which is crucial for fighting off infections.
Exfoliate to Decongest Pores
With all the excess oil and dead skin cells clogging things up, exfoliation becomes your best friend. It helps slough away the dull layer of skin, preventing breakouts and allowing your other skincare products to penetrate more effectively. However, the key is balance. Over-exfoliating can damage your skin barrier, making it more susceptible to irritation and infection. Opt for a gentle chemical exfoliant with AHAs (like glycolic acid) or BHAs (like salicylic acid) two to three times a week. Salicylic acid is particularly brilliant for monsoons as it’s oil-soluble and can get deep into the pores to clear out gunk. If you prefer physical scrubs, choose one with fine, uniform particles and use it with a very light hand.
Switch to a Lightweight Moisturiser
It’s a common mistake to skip moisturiser during the monsoon, thinking the humidity is enough hydration. In reality, your skin can still get dehydrated, which can ironically cause it to produce even more oil to compensate. The trick is to ditch your heavy winter creams for something lighter. Look for gel-based, water-based, or lotion formulas that contain humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerine. These ingredients pull moisture from the air into your skin, providing hydration without the greasy, suffocating feeling. A lightweight moisturiser will keep your skin plump and balanced, reinforcing its natural barrier against the damp environment.
Don't You Dare Skip Sunscreen
Those clouds are deceptive. Up to 80% of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate cloud cover, which means you’re still at risk of sun damage, tanning, and premature ageing. Sunscreen is a year-round necessity, and the monsoon is no exception. The challenge is finding one that doesn’t feel sticky or wash off in a downpour. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Gel-based or matte-finish formulas are excellent for oily and combination skin types. For extra staying power, consider a ‘water-resistant’ variant, but remember that you still need to reapply it every few hours, especially if you’ve been sweating or caught in the rain.
Go Minimal with Makeup
Heavy, full-coverage foundations and creamy products are a recipe for clogged pores during the monsoon. Humidity and sweat can cause makeup to melt and slide into your pores, leading to breakouts. This is the ideal time to embrace a more minimal approach. Swap your heavy foundation for a lightweight tinted moisturiser, a BB cream, or even just a good concealer for spot-treating. Use waterproof mascara and eyeliner to avoid smudging. Instead of heavy cream blushes, opt for a powder formula or a lip-and-cheek tint that offers a light stain without the greasy texture. Letting your skin breathe will make a noticeable difference.
