A $100 Billion AI Windfall
A recent report from Goldman Sachs has sent ripples through the financial world, projecting a massive influx of value into India's publicly traded AI sector. The investment bank estimates that between $50 billion and $100 billion in market capitalisation
could be added over the next two to five years from the initial public offerings (IPOs) of currently private AI companies. This optimistic forecast is built on a detailed analysis of India's burgeoning AI startup scene, where significant private investment is paving the way for a new generation of companies to mature and eventually seek public listings. The report signals a pivotal moment, suggesting India is moving beyond being a peripheral player and becoming a central hub in the global AI buildout.
The Engine Room: Software and Data
The enthusiasm isn't just about AI in the abstract; it's focused on specific, high-growth areas. The Goldman Sachs outlook shines a spotlight on enterprise software, data services, conversational AI, and cloud management as particularly fertile ground for future IPOs. For years, India's tech story was dominated by IT services giants who built their businesses on a labour-arbitrage model. Now, a new class of company is emerging. These are 'AI Adopters'—businesses applying AI and machine learning to revolutionise industries like healthcare, finance, and e-commerce—and 'AI Enablers' who build the foundational infrastructure like data centres and cloud platforms that the entire ecosystem relies on. This shift indicates a maturing market where value is increasingly tied to intellectual property and innovative technology, not just scale.
Fueling the IPO Fire
Several powerful trends are converging to create this IPO-ready environment. The most critical is a dramatic surge in private funding. According to the report, private equity investment in Indian AI startups tripled since 2024, reaching approximately $5 billion in 2025. In fact, AI's share of total private equity funding in India has quadrupled, now accounting for about 20% of all capital deployed. This influx of cash allows startups to scale their operations, refine their products, and achieve the stability needed for a public listing. Citing data from Stanford University, the report notes that India now ranks among the top six global destinations for private AI funding and fourth for the number of newly funded AI companies, challenging outdated perceptions of the country's role in tech innovation.
Identifying the IPO Contenders
Goldman Sachs identified a cohort of 84 privately held companies it calls 'Private AI Contenders', with a combined estimated value of around $55 billion. Of these, about 70 are considered mid-to-late-stage firms, making them the most likely candidates for future listings. The report projects that if 25% to 50% of these companies go public, they could do so at valuations that are, on average, four times their current worth, leading to the massive $50 billion to $100 billion market cap increase. While the list of contenders isn't public, they span the entire value chain. This includes 'upstream' infrastructure providers, 'midstream' core AI developers, and 'downstream' businesses that deploy AI in sectors like defence, cybersecurity, robotics, and financial services.
A Broader, More Diverse Market
A wave of AI IPOs would do more than just add value; it would fundamentally broaden the Indian stock market. Currently, listed AI-related opportunities are heavily concentrated in 'AI enablers'—companies involved in power, semiconductors, and data centre infrastructure. The forthcoming IPOs are expected to come from currently underrepresented but vital sectors, including specialised data centre operators, enterprise AI service providers, cloud management firms, healthcare AI specialists, and computer vision companies. This would give both institutional and retail investors new avenues to participate in India's technology growth story, offering exposure to a more diverse and dynamic range of businesses at the forefront of innovation.
