The well-trodden path between Bengaluru and Goa is getting a significant upgrade. Indian Railways has announced a new Vande Bharat Express, promising to make the journey faster, more scenic, and more convenient than ever before.
A Faster Journey on a New Express
The Railway Board has officially
approved the introduction of a new Vande Bharat Express service connecting Yesvantpur in Bengaluru with Madgaon in Goa. This move aims to slash travel time and offer a premium, high-speed travel option for one of India’s most popular leisure and business routes. The journey is expected to take approximately 13 hours and 20 minutes from Yesvantpur to Madgaon, and slightly less, at 12 hours and 55 minutes, on the return trip. The new service, operating under train numbers 26655 and 26656, is a chair car service designed for daytime travel. While an official launch date has not been announced, it is expected to commence in the third week of November 2026.
Your New Travel Itinerary
The schedule for the new Vande Bharat service is designed for passenger convenience. Train number 26655 will depart from Yesvantpur at 7:35 AM and arrive in Madgaon at 8:55 PM the same day. This service will run six days a week, with no service on Wednesdays. For the return journey, train number 26656 will leave Madgaon at 8:20 AM and reach Yesvantpur at 9:15 PM. This leg of the service will operate six days a week, excluding Thursdays. This schedule provides a reliable daytime connection, allowing travellers to enjoy the scenic route and arrive at their destination before late at night. The existing Mangaluru Central-Madgaon Vande Bharat Express will be discontinued to accommodate this new, longer route.
A Scenic Ride Through the Western Ghats
One of the most appealing aspects of this new service is its route. The train will travel via Mangaluru Junction, traversing the stunning Western Ghats. The section between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road is particularly known for its picturesque landscapes, offering passengers views of lush green hills, valleys, and dense forests. This makes the journey not just a means of transport but an experience in itself. The train will also improve connectivity for several towns in Karnataka's interior and coastal belts, with 12 stops planned along the way. Key halts include Hassan, Sakleshpur, Mangaluru Junction, Udupi, Murdeshwar, and Karwar, linking important commercial, tourist, and pilgrimage centres.
What Makes This Speed Possible?
This significant reduction in travel time is the result of major infrastructure upgrades. The completion of track electrification on the Bengaluru–Mangaluru railway route in December 2025 was a crucial step. This project, which included navigating the challenging terrain of the Western Ghats, allows for the operation of faster electric locomotives like those used by the Vande Bharat Express. Previously, train journeys on this route could take between 14 to over 15 hours, often with inconsistencies. By standardising the journey to around 13 hours, Indian Railways is making train travel a much more competitive and attractive option compared to overnight buses, which often take a similar amount of time but with less comfort and fewer amenities.
