Why Monsoon Demands a New Routine
The shift from scorching summer to the damp, humid monsoon season can throw your skin off balance. The excess moisture in the air traps dirt, pollutants, and bacteria on your skin's surface, creating a perfect breeding ground for acne and infections.
Your skin may start producing more oil to compensate, leading to a greasy feel and clogged pores. A dedicated monsoon skincare routine isn't about adding more products, but about using the right ones to keep skin clean, hydrated without being heavy, and protected.
Step 1: Cleanse Thoroughly, But Gently
Cleansing is the most critical step. During the monsoon, it's best to wash your face twice a day to remove the grime, sweat, and excess oil that accumulate. Opt for a gentle, pH-balanced, or soap-free cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin of its natural oils. Over-washing or using harsh cleansers can damage your skin barrier, triggering even more oil production. For those who wear makeup or sunscreen, double cleansing at night—starting with an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based one—is highly effective.
Step 2: Exfoliate to Unclog Pores
Humidity can cause a build-up of dead skin cells, leaving your complexion looking dull. Regular exfoliation is key to sloughing them away and keeping pores clear. However, moderation is crucial. Exfoliate just once or twice a week with a gentle chemical exfoliant containing AHAs (like glycolic acid) or BHAs (like salicylic acid). Salicylic acid is particularly great for monsoons as it is oil-soluble and can penetrate deep into pores to clear out sebum. Avoid harsh physical scrubs, which can irritate the skin.
Step 3: Tone and Add a Lightweight Serum
An alcohol-free toner can help remove any last traces of impurities, tighten pores, and restore your skin's pH balance. After toning, apply a lightweight, water-based serum. Look for ingredients like niacinamide, which helps regulate oil production and reduces inflammation, or hyaluronic acid for a dose of hydration that doesn’t feel heavy. Vitamin C serums are also excellent for combating the dullness that often comes with gloomy monsoon days.
Step 4: Moisturise with a Light Touch
Yes, you absolutely need to moisturise during the monsoon. Skipping it can dehydrate your skin, causing it to produce even more oil. The trick is to switch from heavy creams to a lightweight, non-comedogenic, and oil-free formula. Gel-based or water-based moisturisers are perfect for providing adequate hydration without clogging pores or feeling sticky in the humid weather.
Step 5: Never Skip Sunscreen
This is a non-negotiable rule. Many people believe sunscreen is unnecessary on cloudy or rainy days, but up to 80% of the sun's harmful UV rays can penetrate through clouds. Daily sunscreen use is essential to protect your skin from tanning, premature ageing, and pigmentation. Choose a broad-spectrum formula with at least SPF 30. To combat the stickiness of the season, opt for a lightweight, gel-based, or matte-finish sunscreen.
Bonus: Weekly Care and Good Habits
Once a week, use a clay mask with ingredients like kaolin or charcoal to draw out deep-seated impurities and control excess oil. Beyond skincare products, simple habits can make a huge difference. Avoid touching your face frequently, as this can transfer bacteria. Keep your towels, pillowcases, and makeup brushes clean to prevent bacterial growth in the damp environment. And finally, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to keep your skin healthy from the inside out.
