powerful influencer is light. Exposure to light, especially sunlight, signals to your brain that it's daytime, suppressing the production of melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel drowsy. As darkness falls, melatonin levels rise, preparing your body for sleep. This delicate dance of light and hormones is what keeps your sleep-wake cycle in sync with the day.
Winter: The Urge to 'Hibernate'
As winter days shorten, reduced exposure to natural light can disrupt your circadian rhythm. Your body may produce melatonin earlier in the evening, making you feel tired sooner. Some studies suggest humans experience longer REM sleep in winter compared to summer, a phase of sleep linked to memory and mood regulation. This might be a biological echo of a need for more restorative rest during darker months. This seasonal shift can also lead to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression linked to the lack of light. Symptoms often include low energy and oversleeping, a condition known as hypersomnolence. Even for those without clinical SAD, the 'winter blues' can manifest as increased fatigue and a desire for more sleep.
Summer: Longer Days and Restless Nights
Summer brings its own set of sleep challenges. Longer daylight hours mean light exposure continues late into the evening, which can delay your body's melatonin production and push your natural bedtime later. But the biggest culprit for poor summer sleep is often heat. Your body's core temperature needs to drop slightly to initiate and maintain sleep. When your bedroom is too warm and humid, your body struggles to cool down, which can make it harder to fall asleep and can lead to more frequent awakenings during the night. Research shows that even mild heat exposure can reduce time spent in deep, restorative sleep stages.
How to Adapt Your Routine for Better Sleep
While you can't control the seasons, you can control your routine to support consistent, high-quality sleep. In winter, maximize your morning light exposure by taking a walk or sitting by a window shortly after waking up; this helps anchor your circadian rhythm. Some people find light therapy lamps helpful for combating the effects of reduced sunlight. In summer, focus on keeping your sleep environment cool. Use blackout curtains to block out evening light and morning sun, and consider fans or air conditioning to maintain a comfortable bedroom temperature. Try taking a lukewarm shower before bed to help lower your body temperature.
Consistency Is Your Best Tool
Regardless of the season, the most powerful tool for stabilizing your sleep is a consistent routine. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends, helps to regulate your body's internal clock. Creating a relaxing wind-down routine—such as reading a book, gentle stretching, or listening to calm music—can signal to your brain that it's time for sleep. Avoid heavy meals, caffeine, and stimulating screens close to bedtime, as these can interfere with your ability to fall asleep. By creating a predictable schedule, you provide your body with the stability it needs to navigate the natural disruptions of the changing seasons.
