Forget everything you thought you knew about robotics. In Beijing, an event colloquially known as the 'Robot Olympics' has taken centre stage, showcasing breathtaking advances in artificial intelligence and engineering. Officially called the World Humanoid
Robot Games, this five-day spectacle is now in its second year, attracting over 2,000 robotic competitors to demonstrate China's rapid progress in advanced robotics. Staged in the National Speed Skating Oval, built for the 2022 Winter Olympics, the games feature 51 events, including running, table tennis, soccer, and even high jump. It's less of a sporting event and more of a stunning preview of a future where machines move with human-like, and now, superhuman ability.
The Record-Shattering Sprint
The headline event was the 100-metre dash, where the ghost of Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second world record loomed large. It was shattered. A humanoid robot named Tiangong Ultra, developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, blazed across the finish line in a staggering 9.39 seconds. Another competitor, a robot named Lightning from the smartphone maker Honor, also finished faster than Bolt with a time of 9.47 seconds. In a test event, Lightning had reportedly clocked an even faster 9.32 seconds. These times, achieved by bipedal, two-legged robots, represent a monumental leap in robotic locomotion. The finish wasn't always graceful—the robots needed to slam into a cushioned wall to stop, with some falling and needing to be carried away—but the speed was undeniable.
Meet the New Champions
The stars of the show are more than just gears and wires; they are the culmination of years of research. Tiangong Ultra and Lightning are at the forefront, but they represent a host of competitors from various Chinese firms and universities. Lightning, for example, had its legs lengthened by 10cm specifically for these games after winning the Beijing half marathon in April. These robots are a testament to rapid innovation. To put it in perspective, the winning 100m time at the inaugural games just last year was a much slower 21.50 seconds. This year’s performance demonstrates an exponential improvement in balance, power, and coordination, driven by breakthroughs in AI-powered control systems.
More Than Just Speed
While the sprint captured global attention, other incredible feats were happening across the arena. In the standing high jump, a humanoid robot achieved a height of 2.88 metres. This soars above the human world record of 2.45 metres set by Javier Sotomayor in 1993. These events are designed to test the limits of robotic agility, decision-making, and motor control in ways that have direct applications beyond the sporting field. From marching in perfect synchronisation during the opening ceremony to competing in complex games like soccer, the robots showcased a versatility that points towards their future use in logistics, manufacturing, and even domestic assistance.
A Global Tech Race
This event is not happening in a vacuum. It is a powerful display in the intensifying technology race, particularly between China and the US. China has declared humanoid robots a strategic emerging industry and is investing heavily, aiming to build a world-class industry by 2027. This push has been met with scrutiny from the West. Citing national security reasons, the US Federal Communications Commission recently announced a ban on imports of new foreign-made humanoid robots, a move seen as targeting China's growing dominance in the field. The games, therefore, are as much a showcase of national ambition as they are of technological prowess.
