Step 1: Cleanse Gently, Twice a Day
During the monsoon, increased humidity mixes with sweat and environmental pollutants, which can easily clog pores and lead to acne. [4, 15] It’s essential to cleanse your face twice daily, but over-washing is a common mistake that can strip your skin’s
natural oils and cause it to produce even more oil in response. [3, 16, 17] Opt for a gentle, soap-free, or pH-balanced cleanser. [2, 14] For those with oily or acne-prone skin, dermatologists often recommend formulas containing ingredients like salicylic acid or tea tree oil to help keep breakouts at bay. [3, 4, 13]
Step 2: Use a Lightweight, Hydrating Moisturiser
It’s a common myth that oily or damp-feeling skin doesn't need moisturiser. [3] In reality, skipping this step can dehydrate your skin, prompting it to produce more oil to compensate. [16] The key is to switch from heavy creams to a lightweight, non-comedogenic (meaning it won't clog pores) moisturiser. [9, 23] Look for water-based or gel-based formulas containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which provide hydration without adding greasiness. [15, 20, 23]
Step 3: Sunscreen is Still Non-Negotiable
Don’t let cloudy skies fool you; up to 80% of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate through clouds. [19, 21] Dermatologists stress that daily sunscreen application is crucial year-round to prevent premature ageing, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer. [5, 6, 7] For the monsoon, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. [4, 16] To combat the stickiness of the season, look for a lightweight, water-resistant, or matte-finish formula that won’t feel heavy or slide off with sweat. [8, 17]
Step 4: Add a Targeted Serum
The monsoon is a great time to incorporate a targeted serum to address specific skin concerns. Niacinamide is a standout ingredient for humid weather, as it helps regulate oil production, minimises the appearance of pores, and strengthens the skin barrier. [10, 12, 13] If you're dealing with dullness, a Vitamin C serum can help brighten your complexion and provide antioxidant protection against pollution. [18, 23] For those prone to breakouts, a product with salicylic acid can help keep pores clear. [13, 25]
Step 5: Exfoliate, But Don't Overdo It
Regular exfoliation is important for removing the buildup of dead skin cells, which can contribute to dullness and clogged pores. [15] However, it’s important to be gentle, as your skin can be more sensitive during the monsoon. [2] Instead of harsh physical scrubs, consider a mild chemical exfoliant with AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) or BHAs (beta-hydroxy acids) once or twice a week. [4, 15] This will help keep your skin smooth and clear without causing irritation. [3]
Step 6: Don't Forget Weekly Care and Prevention
Incorporate a weekly clay mask, using ingredients like Multani Mitti (Fuller's Earth), to absorb excess oil and deep clean pores. [2, 11, 13] It's also crucial to practice good hygiene to prevent fungal infections, which thrive in damp environments. [4, 24] Always dry your skin thoroughly after getting wet, especially in skin folds, and consider using an antifungal powder in sweat-prone areas. [17, 24] Also, try to avoid heavy, pore-clogging makeup; opt for lightweight or water-based products instead. [2, 8, 15]
