Understanding the Journey
Reaching the remote beauty of Sangla and Kalpa is a multi-stage adventure. There are no direct flights or trains to these high-altitude towns. The journey almost always involves first reaching either Chandigarh or, more commonly, Shimla. From these hubs,
you will embark on a stunning, winding road trip into the heart of the Kinnaur valley. This final leg is where the true Himalayan experience begins, so planning each step is key to a smooth and enjoyable trip.
From Delhi: The Primary Gateway
As the most common starting point, Delhi offers several options to begin your trip to the Kinnaur region.By Air: The nearest airport with limited connectivity is Jubbarhatti Airport in Shimla, about 223-250 km from Sangla and Kalpa. A more practical option is flying to Chandigarh International Airport (IXC), which has better flight frequency from all major cities and is roughly 315-350 km away. From either airport, you will need to hire a taxi or take a bus for the onward road journey.By Train: The journey by rail involves reaching Kalka (KLK), the nearest major railway station. Kalka is well-connected to Delhi by several trains, including the Kalka Shatabdi. From Kalka, you can either hire a taxi directly to Kalpa (a long journey) or take the famous UNESCO World Heritage Kalka-Shimla toy train to Shimla, and proceed from there by road.By Road: A direct road trip is a popular choice. The route from Delhi is approximately 560-590 km and takes 14-16 hours. You will drive via NH5 through Chandigarh, Shimla, Narkanda, and Rampur. Several private and government-run (HRTC) overnight buses also ply from Delhi's ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Shimla or directly to Reckong Peo, the district headquarters near Kalpa.
From Chandigarh: A Closer Start
Chandigarh serves as a convenient and closer hub for the journey. The road distance to Reckong Peo is around 320-338 km.By Road: This is the most direct option from Chandigarh. You can hire a private taxi, which takes approximately 7-9 hours to reach the Kalpa/Reckong Peo area, depending on traffic and road conditions. Alternatively, several HRTC and private buses run daily from Chandigarh to Reckong Peo. The journey by bus can take anywhere from 9 to 12 hours. Some services go via Shimla, while others are direct.
The Final Leg: Shimla to Kalpa and Sangla
The stretch from Shimla is the most scenic part of the journey. The distance to Kalpa is about 230-240 km, which takes 7-9 hours by car. The route follows the historic Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH5) along the Sutlej river. The main town and transport hub in the area is Reckong Peo. Kalpa is a short, steep 7 km drive up from Reckong Peo. To reach Sangla Valley, you must take a detour at Karcham, which is about 40 km from Reckong Peo. Regular buses and shared taxis connect Shimla to Reckong Peo, and from there, local transport is available to both Kalpa and Sangla.
Festive and Winter Travel Considerations
Planning a trip during the festive winter months of December and January requires extra caution. While the main highway to Reckong Peo generally remains open, heavy snowfall can cause temporary closures, especially on the final ascent to Kalpa. The road to Sangla Valley, and particularly to Chitkul, is more susceptible to closure from mid-December onwards. Many hotels in Sangla shut down for winter. It's crucial to check road conditions before you travel, book accommodations that remain open in winter, and add buffer days to your itinerary to account for potential weather delays.
