Why Humidity Changes Everything
High humidity, a hallmark of the Indian monsoon season, has a direct impact on your skin. The moisture in the air signals your sebaceous glands to produce more oil, or sebum. When this excess oil mixes with sweat, dirt, and dead skin cells, it creates
the perfect environment for clogged pores and acne-causing bacteria to thrive. Many people notice their skin feels greasy and looks shiny by midday. You might also find that your usual skincare products suddenly feel too heavy or sticky. This is a clear sign that your skin's needs have changed with the weather, and your routine needs to adapt to keep it balanced and clear.
Lighten Your Cleanser
The first and most crucial step is to adjust your cleansing routine. Heavy, creamy cleansers that worked in drier months can feel suffocating in high humidity. Switch to a gentle, lightweight cleanser, such as a gel or mild foaming formula. It's important to wash your face twice a day to remove the buildup of sweat, oil, and pollutants without stripping your skin of its natural moisture. Over-washing or using harsh, alcohol-based products can backfire, causing your skin to produce even more oil to compensate. Look for non-comedogenic cleansers, meaning they are formulated not to clog pores. For those who wear makeup or heavy sunscreen, consider double cleansing in the evening, starting with an oil-based cleanser to break everything down, followed by your gentle water-based wash.
Embrace Gentle Exfoliation
With increased oil and sweat, regular exfoliation becomes essential to prevent clogged pores. However, it's crucial to be gentle. Harsh physical scrubs can irritate the skin and damage its protective barrier, potentially leading to more breakouts. Instead, opt for chemical exfoliants like Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) or Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs). Salicylic acid, a BHA, is particularly effective for humid weather as it is oil-soluble and can penetrate deep into pores to dissolve clogs. Limit exfoliation to one to three times a week, depending on your skin's tolerance, to keep your complexion smooth and clear without causing irritation.
Switch to a Lightweight Moisturiser
It’s a common myth that you should skip moisturiser when your skin feels oily. In reality, even oily skin needs hydration, and skipping this step can cause your skin to become dehydrated, prompting it to produce even more oil. The key is to swap your heavy creams for a lightweight, water-based or gel-based moisturiser. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which hydrates the skin by drawing in moisture, and niacinamide, which helps regulate oil production and strengthen the skin barrier. These formulas absorb quickly, deliver essential hydration without a greasy feel, and are often labelled "non-comedogenic".
Never Skip Sunscreen
Even on cloudy or rainy monsoon days, harmful UV rays can penetrate through and damage your skin. Sunscreen is a non-negotiable step every single day. The challenge in humid weather is finding a formula that doesn't feel heavy or greasy. Look for sunscreens with a lightweight, gel-based, or matte finish. Opt for products labelled "oil-free" and "non-comedogenic" to ensure they won't contribute to clogged pores. A broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher is recommended to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays, preventing sun damage and premature ageing.
Beyond Your Skincare Shelf
A few lifestyle habits can also support your skin during this humid season. Try to avoid touching your face throughout the day to prevent transferring dirt and bacteria. Changing your pillowcases frequently is also a good practice, as they can accumulate oil, sweat, and product residue. Additionally, what you eat can play a role; staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water and reducing intake of overly sugary or fried foods can help support overall skin health. Finally, if you've been sweating, a quick rinse with plain water can help remove impurities without the need for a full cleanse.
