It’s a common misconception that if clothes aren't dripping, they aren't adding much moisture to the air. The reality is quite different. A single load of washing, even after a thorough spin cycle, can hold almost two litres of water. As these clothes dry
on a rack in your living room or balcony, all of that water evaporates into the surrounding air. This process can dramatically increase the humidity level in a room by up to 30 percent. In a small, enclosed space, the relative humidity can spike to levels similar to a tropical rainforest, creating an environment that is far from ideal for your home and health. This hidden flood of moisture is the root cause of several household issues, from a lingering musty smell to more serious structural and health problems.
Why High Humidity is a Problem
So, what's the harm in a little extra moisture? It turns out, quite a lot. Consistently high indoor humidity creates the perfect breeding ground for mould and mildew. These fungi thrive in damp, warm conditions and can grow on walls, ceilings, behind furniture, and around windows. The spores they release into the air can trigger allergies and respiratory issues, including coughing, wheezing, and sneezing, particularly affecting children, the elderly, and those with asthma or weakened immune systems. Beyond mould, this humid environment is also a paradise for dust mites, microscopic creatures that are a major cause of indoor allergies. They proliferate when humidity levels stay above 50-60%. The dampness can also damage your home itself, causing paint to blister, wallpaper to peel, and even affecting wooden furniture.
Smart Drying Habits for Indian Homes
Especially in India, where the monsoon season makes outdoor drying impossible for months, mastering indoor drying is essential. The goal is to get clothes dry as quickly as possible, ideally within four to six hours, to prevent the growth of odour-causing bacteria. First, give your laundry an extra spin cycle in the washing machine to remove as much water as possible. When hanging clothes, ensure there is ample space between each item for air to circulate; overcrowding the rack is a common mistake that slows drying significantly. If possible, dedicate one room for drying and keep the door closed to contain the moisture, but open a window to let it escape. Airflow is your best friend. Using a ceiling or pedestal fan directed at the clothes can cut drying time by more than a third.

For those living in apartments, where space is a premium, several clever solutions can help. Ceiling-mounted pulley racks are extremely popular in Indian cities as they use vertical space, keeping your floor clear. Wall-mounted accordion-style racks are another great space-saving option for utility areas or balconies. If persistent dampness is an issue, especially in highly humid coastal cities or during peak monsoon, investing in an electric dehumidifier is a game-changer. A dehumidifier works by pulling moisture out of the air, which not only speeds up drying but also helps maintain a healthy indoor humidity level below 60%, preventing mould and dust mite growth. Running an air conditioner in the room can have a similar dehumidifying effect.
