The New Franchise Formula
Bollywood is leaning heavily on sequels, but with a twist. Instead of straightforward continuations, producers are treating franchises as flexible brands. Think of the 'Welcome' series. After the success of 'Welcome' (2007) and 'Welcome Back' (2015),
the third installment, 'Welcome to the Jungle' (2026), arrived with a massive, reconfigured ensemble cast. While legacy actors like Paresh Rawal returned, the film was built around a new core and story. This approach keeps the brand recognition that guarantees an opening weekend audience while introducing enough novelty to avoid creative fatigue. It’s a strategy that treats the franchise name as a platform for different stories and stars, rather than a single, continuous narrative.
Minimising Risk, Maximising Returns
In a market where new ideas are a huge gamble, a franchise title is seen as financial insurance. Production houses know that a familiar name reduces marketing costs and creates built-in audience curiosity. The box office is unpredictable, and the rise of streaming platforms has added another layer of complexity. By using an established IP, studios are de-risking their investment. Introducing new actors or conflicts within that familiar world is a lower-risk way to innovate. The success of 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2' (2022) is a prime example. The film, a standalone sequel to the 2007 hit, starred Kartik Aaryan instead of original lead Akshay Kumar and became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of the year. This proved that with the right execution, the brand itself could be the main draw, allowing for fresh energy without starting from scratch.
The Practicality of Casting Changes
Sometimes, the reasons for recasting are purely practical. Original actors may become unavailable due to scheduling conflicts, a common issue for top-tier stars who book projects years in advance. Salary demands can also be a factor; an actor's market value can skyrocket after a hit, making them too expensive for a sequel's budget. In other cases, actors may simply not be interested in reprising a role. Shah Rukh Khan, for instance, reportedly exited the 'Don' franchise because he wasn't keen on playing the character for a third time, leading to Ranveer Singh being cast for 'Don 3'. These changes, while sometimes controversial, open the door for a new generation of actors to carry a legacy forward, injecting new life and appeal into a beloved series.
Building Bollywood's Cinematic Universes
The strategy also ties into a grander ambition: building interconnected cinematic universes, inspired by Hollywood's Marvel model. Yash Raj Films' Spy Universe is the most prominent example, linking the 'Tiger' films, 'War', and 'Pathaan'. These films share a world and feature character crossovers, like Salman Khan's Tiger appearing in 'Pathaan'. This model relies on continuously introducing new protagonists, villains, and conflicts to expand the world. While films like 'Ek Tha Tiger' (2012) and 'War' (2019) were initially standalones, they were later integrated into a shared universe. This allows for endless storytelling possibilities, creating a larger-than-life saga that keeps audiences hooked by promising future team-ups and epic-scale events.
A Calculated Gamble on Audience Appetite
Ultimately, this trend caters to a dual audience desire for both nostalgia and novelty. Viewers are drawn to the comfort and emotional connection of a familiar world, but they also crave new thrills. Mixing established franchises with fresh elements aims to satisfy both. However, it's not a foolproof plan. While 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2' soared, other recast sequels like 'Race 3' and 'Bunty Aur Babli 2' struggled to connect with audiences who were deeply attached to the original actors. The success of this strategy hinges on a delicate balance. The new elements must feel like a worthy evolution of the world, not just a cynical attempt to cash in on a name. When it works, it can revive a franchise for a new generation. When it fails, it can alienate the loyal fanbase it was meant to attract.
