Dubai’s iconic Gold Souk, a vibrant marketplace that has dazzled visitors for generations, is set to receive a glittering upgrade. A new public walking attraction promises to blend the area's rich heritage with modern luxury and convenience.
A Walk of Gold
Dubai is planning
to unveil what it calls the world's first and longest walkway made of 24-carat gold before the end of 2026. This ambitious public attraction is the centrepiece of the newly launched Dubai Gold District in Deira, a project designed to cement the emirate's status as a global hub for the gold and jewellery trade. According to officials, the walkway is scheduled to open within the next two months, offering residents and tourists a unique experience to stroll along a literal golden path. The project was announced as part of a recent event that also saw Dubai secure two Guinness World Records for the world's heaviest and largest pair of gold earrings. While the exact construction details and quantity of gold remain under wraps, the announcement signals a bold new chapter for one of Dubai's most historic areas.
The New Dubai Gold District
This golden walkway is a key feature of the broader Dubai Gold District, an initiative by master developer Ithra Dubai. Launched in January 2026, the district is a massive, purpose-built ecosystem designed to modernize Deira's famous commercial sector. It consolidates the entire spectrum of the gold trade—from retail and wholesale to bullion trading and investment services—into one unified hub. The district already hosts over 1,000 retailers, featuring not just gold and jewellery but also luxury perfumes and lifestyle brands. This redevelopment is part of the Deira Enrichment Project, a master plan aimed at revitalizing the emirate's original trading hub while preserving its cultural charm. The goal is to enhance the area for a growing number of international buyers and tourists, transforming the traditional souk into a modern global destination.
Blending Heritage with Modern Comfort
While the idea of a golden street is undeniably modern, the project is deeply rooted in honouring the area's history. Developers have emphasized that the Gold Souk Extension pays homage to Dubai's rich trading legacy. The new development isn't just about flashy attractions; it's also about improving the visitor experience. The plan includes spacious, shaded walkways, new bridges, and modern facilities designed to make the area more pedestrian-friendly and comfortable, even during hotter months. Improved connectivity to public transportation and the addition of thousands of new parking spaces are also part of the comprehensive upgrade, addressing longtime infrastructure challenges in the dense, historic district. The extension aims to create a richer experience for visitors by blending the souk's authentic character with the efficiency and amenities of a modern commercial centre.
Boosting Tourism and Trade
The strategic aim of the Dubai Gold District and its walking attraction is twofold: to boost tourism and to strengthen its economic position. The project is a key part of Dubai's 2040 Urban Master Plan and its D33 Economic Agenda, which focuses on driving growth and reinforcing Dubai's global standing. By creating a landmark destination, Dubai aims to attract more tourists and high-networth buyers from around the world. To support this influx, the development includes six new hotels with over 1,000 rooms. Since the start of 2026, the district has already seen a 20% increase in wholesale gold trading offices and a 15% rise in new retail stores, indicating strong commercial demand even before the main attraction opens. The project is not just an upgrade but a strategic expansion designed to secure the future of Deira as the heart of the global gold trade.
