The Core Principle: Age and Risk
The fundamental logic behind insurance premiums is risk assessment. From an insurer's perspective, a younger individual poses a lower mortality risk. People in their 20s are generally healthier, with a longer life expectancy and fewer chronic health issues.
This lower risk translates directly into lower premiums. Insurance companies calculate premiums based on statistical probabilities, and a 25-year-old is statistically far less likely to pass away during the policy term than a 45-year-old. This is the primary reason why the premium for the exact same coverage amount can be significantly cheaper when purchased at a younger age.
Locking In Your Good Health
Your health profile is a major factor in determining your premium. In your 20s, you are likely at your peak health, with a clean medical history and no pre-existing conditions. By taking out a term policy now, you lock in a premium rate based on this excellent state of health. If you wait until your 30s or 40s, the natural course of life means you might develop health issues like hypertension, diabetes, or other conditions. Any such diagnosis in the future would lead to significantly higher premiums or could even make it harder to get approved for a policy. Buying early essentially allows you to get a favourable rate before age-related health complications arise.
The Power of a Fixed, Long-Term Rate
One of the most powerful features of a term insurance policy is that the premium remains fixed for the entire duration of the policy. If you buy a policy at age 25 with a term extending to age 65, you will pay the same low premium for the next 40 years. Someone who waits until age 40 to buy the same coverage will not only start at a much higher premium but will pay that inflated rate for the duration of their policy. Delaying the purchase by just five or ten years can result in paying thousands more annually, which adds up to lakhs over the lifetime of the policy. This long-term saving is a key advantage of starting early.
Higher Coverage Becomes More Affordable
Because premiums are so low in your 20s, you can afford a much higher sum assured, or coverage amount. A good rule of thumb is to have coverage that is at least 10 to 20 times your annual income. When you are young, securing a substantial cover of ₹1 crore or more is very budget-friendly, sometimes costing less than a monthly subscription service. Trying to buy the same ₹1 crore cover in your 40s would be considerably more expensive, potentially costing double or more for the exact same benefit. This affordability allows young professionals to adequately protect their future family's financial needs without straining their current budget.
Other Factors That Influence Premiums
While age is the most significant factor, it's not the only one. Insurers also look at your gender, lifestyle choices like smoking or drinking, occupation, and family medical history. Women often receive slightly lower premiums due to a longer average life expectancy. Being a non-smoker is crucial, as smokers can expect to pay significantly higher rates. Even with these other variables, being young provides a massive head start. A healthy, non-smoking 25-year-old will almost invariably secure a better rate than a healthy, non-smoking 35-year-old for the same policy.
