A Groundbreaking Scientific Review
Scientists have long understood that animals are crucial for forest health. In tropical forests, over 80% of tree species depend on animals to disperse their seeds. This process, called zoochory, involves animals eating fruit and later depositing the seeds elsewhere,
complete with a little fertiliser. Traditionally, research has focused on charismatic megafauna—large birds like toucans, primates, and mammals like elephants and bears—as the primary seed carriers. However, a recent and comprehensive review published in Trends in Plant Science has shifted the focus to a much smaller, and largely overlooked, group of helpers. The review, led by Professor Si-Chong Chen at HKU, synthesised findings from 43 different studies, uncovering a vast network of seed dispersal involving at least 51 invertebrate species and 186 plant taxa across several continents.
The Unseen Gardeners Beneath Our Feet
The stars of this new understanding are not majestic eagles or mighty bears, but humble invertebrates. The study highlights that creatures like slugs, earthworms, beetles, crickets, and even crabs are active participants in seed dispersal. This process, known as invertebrate endozoochory, happens when these small animals consume seeds, which then pass through their digestive tracts unharmed and are excreted in a new location, still viable for germination. While these tiny gardeners can't move seeds across kilometres like a bird or a mammal can, their contribution is uniquely important. They perform precision work, moving seeds away from the competitive shadow of the parent plant into new micro-habitats that might be perfect for sprouting. This challenges the long-held assumption that only larger vertebrates were significant players in reforestation.
Why This Tiny Workforce Matters
The discovery of this widespread invertebrate activity is more than just a scientific curiosity; it has profound implications for conservation. Around the world, the populations of large seed-dispersing birds and mammals are in sharp decline due to habitat loss and other human pressures. This loss creates a crisis for many plant species that depend on them, effectively trapping them in one place and preventing them from adapting to climate change. Some studies suggest that the loss of animal dispersers has already reduced the ability of plants to track climate shifts by a staggering 60%. In this alarming context, invertebrates may provide a critical safety net. In fragmented or degraded ecosystems where larger animals have vanished, these small but numerous creatures can help maintain a baseline level of seed dispersal, ensuring that plant regeneration doesn't halt completely.
Rethinking Reforestation
This new understanding calls for a major rethink of our approach to forest restoration. For decades, many efforts have focused simply on planting trees—a costly and labour-intensive method. Natural regeneration, where forests are allowed to regrow with the help of wildlife, is a more cost-effective and biodiverse alternative. The success of natural regeneration depends entirely on having a healthy community of seed dispersers. The 186-species review suggests that conservation plans must look beyond just protecting large, iconic animals. To truly restore a forest, we must also protect the complex web of life within the soil and undergrowth. This means preserving the habitats of the slugs, beetles, and earthworms that, while less glamorous, are essential for the intricate process of building a resilient and healthy forest ecosystem from the ground up.
