The 'Free' Visa Offer Explained
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has launched a tourism initiative that covers the cost of a UAE entry visa for eligible Indian tourists. It’s important to note this is not a visa-free travel policy for all Indian citizens.
Instead, for those who qualify, the visa fee is waived as part of a travel package. The standard visa cost covered is approximately AED 285, which is roughly $77 or about ₹6,500. This pilot programme is for a limited time, running from August 1 to October 31, 2026, and is initially capped at 20,000 visas.
Who Is Actually Eligible?
This offer is not open to everyone. It is specifically targeted at Indian passport holders travelling from India. The most critical condition is that the trip must be booked as a qualifying holiday package through a participating travel agency or an approved online travel partner. You cannot apply for this free visa independently through a government portal or by simply booking a flight. The waiver is tied directly to the holiday package, which must meet certain criteria set by the tourism department.
The Mandatory Booking Conditions
To qualify for the visa fee waiver, your travel booking must include two key components. First, you must book a stay of at least three consecutive nights at a hotel in Abu Dhabi. Second, the package must include a return flight ticket from India. A flight-only or hotel-only booking will not make you eligible for the free visa. Both elements must be part of the same package purchased from a travel partner participating in the scheme. Because the offer is limited, travellers should confirm with their travel provider that their booking qualifies before making any payment.
How the Process Works
The process is handled entirely by the travel provider. Once you book a qualifying package, the participating travel partner processes the visa application on your behalf. They work with a Destination Management Company (DMC) appointed by DCT Abu Dhabi, which covers the visa cost directly. Alternatively, if the travel partner uses their own existing DMC, they will receive a reimbursement for the visa fee. For the traveller, the bottom line is simple: if your booking is eligible, you should not be asked to pay the visa fee separately.
What About Other 'Free' Visa Offers?
It's easy to confuse this Abu Dhabi-specific promotion with other UAE visa rules. For instance, the UAE also has a separate summer offer that waives visa fees for children under 18 travelling with a parent, which typically runs from mid-July to mid-September. This is a different programme with its own set of rules. Additionally, some Indian passport holders may be eligible for a visa on arrival if they hold a valid visa or residence permit from certain countries like the US or the EU, but this is not free and involves paying a fee at the airport. The current 'free' visa is exclusively tied to the Abu Dhabi tourism promotion.
Is It the Right Deal for You?
This offer is a fantastic deal for Indian travellers who were already planning a holiday in Abu Dhabi for three nights or more. It provides a direct and significant saving on the overall trip cost, especially for families and groups. However, it is not designed for travellers planning a shorter stopover, those who wish to stay in other emirates like Dubai, or those who prefer to book their flights and hotels independently. The key is to see it as a value-add to a specific type of holiday package, not as a blanket waiver. By understanding the fine print, you can determine if your travel plans align with this excellent, but conditional, opportunity.
