What Exactly Is Amrit Bharat?
Think of the Amrit Bharat Express as a significant upgrade for non-AC train travel. Introduced in late 2023, these trains are designed specifically for long-distance routes—typically over 800 kilometres—to serve migrant workers, students, and budget-conscious
families. Unlike premium services, Amrit Bharat focuses on providing a better experience in sleeper and general unreserved coaches. The key innovation is the 'push-pull' technology, with a locomotive at each end of the train. This allows for quicker acceleration and deceleration, cutting down overall journey times. With a maximum operational speed of 130 km/h, it’s a faster alternative to traditional mail and express trains on the same routes.
New Routes Connecting the Heartland
The latest expansion phase directly benefits travellers in North India. A significant new weekly service is the Gorakhpur-Delhi Amrit Bharat Express, which commenced its regular run on August 27, 2026. This route provides a much-needed direct link for passengers from several mid-sized towns in Uttar Pradesh, including Basti, Gonda, Sitapur, and Bareilly, to the national capital. Another approved service is the Gorakhpur-Bandra (Mumbai) express, which will pass through key North Indian cities like Kanpur, Tundla, and Agra Fort before heading west. Furthermore, several new trains originating from hubs like Prayagraj and Subedarganj in Uttar Pradesh will enhance connectivity to western and central India, with stops at important junctions like Kanpur, Agra, and Jhansi. These routes are part of a broader strategy to connect major administrative and commercial centres across the country.
The Onboard Experience: A Major Leap
Passengers on an Amrit Bharat train will notice a marked improvement over older non-AC coaches. The train features cushioned berths and seats, foldable snack tables, and mobile charging points conveniently located for every passenger. The coaches are interconnected with fully sealed gangways, which reduce noise and provide a smoother, jerk-free ride. Safety and hygiene have also been prioritized, with CCTV cameras in all coaches, modern bio-vacuum toilets with sensor-based taps, and aerosol-based fire suppression systems. An onboard passenger information system keeps travellers updated about the journey, similar to what is found on more premium trains.
Amrit Bharat vs. Vande Bharat
It's important not to confuse Amrit Bharat with Vande Bharat. The two serve entirely different purposes and passenger segments. Vande Bharat is a premium, fully air-conditioned, semi-high-speed chair car service for shorter, daytime journeys. In contrast, Amrit Bharat is a non-AC sleeper and general class service designed for affordable, long-distance, and often overnight travel. While Vande Bharat is about speed and premium comfort, Amrit Bharat is about democratizing modern amenities for the masses. Its fares are only about 15-17% higher than conventional mail/express trains, making it a highly accessible upgrade for millions.
Future-Proofing Budget Travel
The expansion is far from over. Indian Railways is already working on the next generation, dubbed Amrit Bharat 3.0, which is expected to introduce air-conditioned coaches into these rakes. This move acknowledges the rising demand for AC travel across all economic strata, especially during India's intense summers. With dozens of Amrit Bharat trains already operational and more in production, the initiative represents a significant commitment to enhancing the travel experience for the majority of rail passengers who rely on non-AC coaches.
