For more localised, street-by-street predictions, private platforms like Skymet Weather and AccuWeather can be very useful. Skymet, another 'made in India' app, uses a vast network of automatic weather stations to provide detailed forecasts. These apps can often predict when rain will start and stop in your specific area, which is invaluable for planning your driving time.
Understanding Weather Alerts
The IMD uses a colour-coded system to indicate the severity of expected weather, which helps in making an informed decision about your travel plans. A Yellow alert suggests you should 'Watch' the situation and stay updated. An Orange alert means you should 'Be Prepared' for potentially disruptive weather. A Red alert is the most serious, signalling that action is needed and it may be best to postpone non-essential travel. Understanding these warnings can help you avoid getting caught in dangerous conditions like flash floods or extremely heavy downpours.
Assessing Road Conditions
Knowing the weather is only half the battle; you also need to know the state of the roads. Real-time navigation apps like Google Maps and Waze are indispensable. They show current traffic congestion, which can often indicate waterlogging, and incorporate user reports and official data to mark road closures. For major routes, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) provides information on its network. While the NHAI doesn't have a single, centralised app for real-time closures nationwide, it collaborates with mapping services to share data on work-in-progress zones and potential hazards. Don't underestimate the power of social media; searching hashtags like #MumbaiTraffic or #BangaloreRains on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) can provide instant, on-the-ground photos and updates from fellow commuters and local traffic police departments.
Your Pre-Trip Vehicle Checklist
A well-maintained vehicle is crucial for monsoon safety. Before you leave, conduct a thorough check of several key components. Ensure your tyres have a tread depth of at least 3mm for a good grip on wet roads. Worn-out tyres are a major risk for skidding and hydroplaning. Inspect your wiper blades; if they leave streaks or make noise, replace them. Clear vision is non-negotiable in heavy rain. Test all your lights—headlights, tail-lights, and indicators—and use your low beams for visibility, as high beams reflect off raindrops and can impair vision. Finally, have your brakes checked, as wet roads can significantly increase braking distance.
Safe Driving Practices in the Rain
Once on the road, adjust your driving to the conditions. Reduce your speed significantly; if you normally drive at 60 km/h, drop to around 40-45 km/h. Double your following distance from the vehicle in front of you to allow for longer braking times. Never use cruise control in wet conditions, as it can increase the risk of losing control if your car hydroplanes. One of the biggest dangers is waterlogged roads. Never drive through standing water if you cannot judge its depth. The safe limit is generally no deeper than the bottom of your car's bumper. If your car stalls in water, do not attempt to restart the engine, as this can cause a catastrophic failure known as hydrostatic lock.
