What is This New System?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is tracking an upper-air cyclonic circulation currently located over the west-central Bay of Bengal. Forecasters expect this circulation to act as the seed for a more organised weather event. Under its influence,
a low-pressure area is likely to form over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal, near the coasts of south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh, around September 11. These low-pressure systems are the primary drivers of the monsoon, pulling moisture-laden winds from the sea over the land, resulting in widespread rainfall.
Expected Path And Intensity
Once the low-pressure area forms, it is forecast to move in a north-westward direction. While its exact intensity is still being monitored, the system is expected to trigger a significant increase in rainfall activity. The IMD and other weather agencies will be issuing more detailed forecasts on its potential intensification and specific impact as it develops further. For now, the focus is on its role in reviving the monsoon after a lull in rainfall activity that was observed over large parts of peninsular India in early September. Fishermen have been advised to exercise caution due to expected rough sea conditions.
Which Regions Will Be Affected?
The primary impact of this system will initially be felt along the east coast. Odisha is expected to see a marked increase in rainfall from September 9 onwards, with heavy rainfall likely between September 10 and 12. Parts of West Bengal are also on alert for heavy showers and thunderstorms. As the system moves inland, the rain bands are expected to cover a wider area. Fairly widespread rain is forecast for Chhattisgarh from September 8 to 12 and for the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra from September 10 to 12. This westward movement means central India and eventually parts of western India could receive significant precipitation in the second week of September. Other states including Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are also forecast to receive rainfall during this period.
A Crucial Spell For The Monsoon Season
This rain spell arrives at a critical juncture for the 2026 southwest monsoon. The season has been characterized by its erratic nature, with some regions experiencing floods while others face deficits. As of early September, the country as a whole had a rainfall deficit of around 14%. Regions like south peninsular India and east and northeast India were particularly short on rain. The performance in September, which contributes a significant portion of the total seasonal rainfall, is vital. This incoming system from the Bay of Bengal could help reduce some of the regional deficits, especially in central India, which would be beneficial for agriculture ahead of the winter cropping season.
A Lull, Not The End
The recent decrease in rainfall in some areas had raised questions about whether the monsoon was beginning its withdrawal. However, meteorologists clarify that it was merely a break. The formal withdrawal of the monsoon is a gradual process that begins in the northwest only when specific conditions, such as five consecutive dry days and a change in wind patterns, are met. This new system from the Bay of Bengal is a clear indication that the monsoon remains active over the country. While rainfall may be subdued in some parts, this system ensures that eastern and central India are set for a wet and active period as the monsoon season heads into its final phase.
