The New Definition of Family
Across urban India, the role of a pet has transformed. Gone are the days of a dog simply being a guard in the yard; today, pets are considered integral family members. This cultural shift, often called 'pet humanisation', is the primary driver behind
the boom in pet-friendly travel. Owners no longer see their pets as an afterthought but as central figures in their lives whose comfort and happiness are paramount. This emotional bond means that for many, a vacation isn't complete unless the whole family—paws and all—can come along. This has led to an explosion in demand for travel options that don't just tolerate pets but actively welcome them.
The Rise of the 'Paw-cation'
The Indian hospitality industry has been quick to respond to this growing market. Searches for pet-friendly accommodations on booking platforms have soared, making it a top filter for travellers. In response, a whole ecosystem of 'paw-cations' has emerged. From boutique homestays in the hills of Himachal Pradesh to luxury resorts in Goa and tea estate bungalows in the South, property owners are rolling out the welcome mat. These aren't just places that allow animals; they offer specialised amenities like pet menus, dedicated play areas, grooming services, and even pet sitters, ensuring that the four-legged guests are as pampered as their human companions. Vacation rentals and apartments are particularly popular, offering the space and flexibility that pet owners desire.
Hitting the Road, Together
When it comes to getting there, the car is king. An overwhelming 93% of Indian pet owners prefer flexible road trips over other modes of transport. This preference makes sense, as car travel allows for spontaneous stops, better control over the environment, and reduces the stress that can come with air or train travel, which often involves significant paperwork and restrictive rules. Weekend getaways to destinations within a few hours' drive have become the default choice. This allows families to pack up their pet, their pet's favourite toys and food, and hit the open road, turning the journey itself into part of the shared adventure.
Planning a Pet-Centric Itinerary
A successful trip with a pet involves more than just booking a friendly hotel. The entire itinerary is now being shaped by their needs and capabilities. Recent travel data shows that pet owners are actively seeking out specific experiences. About 64% look for destinations with dog-friendly beaches or swimming spots, while an equal number prioritise places with cafés and restaurants that have patios. Nature hikes and exploring pet-friendly towns are also high on the list. This means destinations like Goa, Coorg, and Rishikesh are gaining popularity not just for their scenic beauty, but for their relaxed, outdoor-oriented atmosphere that is perfect for exploration on two feet and four paws.
Navigating the Practicalities
While the trend is joyful, it's not without its challenges. India is still more 'pet-tolerant' than universally 'pet-friendly'. Not all hotels that claim to be pet-friendly are equipped for it, and it’s crucial to call ahead to confirm policies, especially regarding breed or size restrictions and extra fees. Essential planning includes consulting a vet before you leave, ensuring all vaccinations are up to date, and carrying a health certificate. Packing is also key: bring familiar food to avoid stomach upsets, a favourite bed or blanket for comfort, and plenty of water for the journey. Frequent stops for exercise and hydration are non-negotiable on road trips.
