A State Under a Heat Siege
The final weeks of June 2026 were brutal for Uttar Pradesh. A severe heatwave swept across the state, pushing temperatures to unbearable levels. On June 27th, Lakhimpur Kheri recorded a blistering 43.2 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest places
in the country. [15] Cities like Prayagraj, Banda, and the capital, Lucknow, were not far behind, with temperatures consistently soaring between 40 and 43 degrees, markedly above normal for this time of year. [15, 22, 30] The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued repeated heatwave warnings, advising residents to stay indoors and hydrated. [22, 23, 24] The prolonged heat put immense strain on power grids, water resources, and public health. Recognizing the danger, the state government even issued special guidelines for schools to protect students from heat-related illnesses, a testament to the severity of the conditions. [12]
The First Welcome Showers
The shift began subtly over the weekend. While many districts continued to swelter, forecasts on June 27th and 28th brought a glimmer of hope. [15, 17] Meteorologists predicted a new spell of rainfall beginning on June 29th, with thunderstorms and gusty winds expected in isolated places, particularly in the eastern parts of the state. [15, 22] For cities like Lucknow, the forecast for June 29th indicated a partly cloudy sky with the possibility of light rain toward the evening. [7, 30] These initial showers, though not widespread, represented a crucial turning point. They were the first tangible sign that the oppressive dome of heat that had settled over the state was finally beginning to break, bringing the first drops of desperately needed relief.
The Monsoon's Delayed Arrival
These pre-monsoon showers are the heralds of a much larger, more significant weather event: the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon. This year, the monsoon's advance into Uttar Pradesh has been delayed. Normally expected between June 18th and June 27th depending on the region, the delay contributed to a significant rainfall deficit across the state. [19] However, the IMD has confirmed that conditions are now favourable for the monsoon to advance into Uttar Pradesh within the next two to four days. [14, 15, 17] This impending arrival promises to bring an end to the dry spell and initiate a period of sustained rainfall that is vital for the region's agriculture and ecosystem.
What the Forecast Holds
The outlook for the coming days is overwhelmingly positive for the heat-stricken residents of UP. The most significant change will be a dramatic drop in temperatures. Meteorologists have predicted that temperatures could fall by as much as 8 to 9 degrees Celsius as the monsoon sets in. [15] Widespread rainfall is expected across the state starting from June 30th. [15] This will not only cool the air but also replenish water sources and provide critical moisture for farmers ahead of the main sowing season. While the initial relief is scattered, the comprehensive cooldown is just around the corner, promising a transition from the dangerous heat of summer to the life-giving rains of the monsoon season.
