A New Festive Travel Trend
Recent travel reports indicate a significant shift in holiday patterns. Many Indians are now opting for multiple short, spontaneous trips during the festive quarter from October to December. While popular spots like Rishikesh and Jaipur still draw crowds,
the fastest-growing destinations are nestled in the Himalayas. Bookings for Sangla have reportedly tripled compared to last year, with Kalpa seeing a nearly threefold increase as well. This surge highlights a desire to escape the noise and find peace in nature, with Kinnaur becoming a prime destination for this new wave of quiet tourism.
Sangla Valley: A Paradise by the Baspa River
Often called the Baspa Valley, Sangla is a breathtakingly beautiful region known for its lush meadows, dense forests, and the crystal-clear Baspa River that flows through it. The valley offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. A key attraction is the historic Kamru Fort, a tower-like structure that was once the seat of the rulers of Kinnaur and is now dedicated to the goddess Kamakshi. Travellers can also wander through Batseri village to admire traditional wooden architecture and shop for local handicrafts like Kinnauri shawls and caps. For a truly unique experience, a drive to Chitkul, the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibet border, is a must.
Kalpa: Majestic Views and Apple Orchards
Perched at an altitude of around 9,700 feet, Kalpa is famous for one thing above all: its spellbinding, direct view of the Kinner Kailash range. Waking up to the sight of the morning sun illuminating the sacred Shivling peak is an experience that stays with you forever. The village itself is a quiet settlement surrounded by sprawling apple orchards, which are particularly beautiful during the autumn harvest season. Rather than a long list of attractions, Kalpa's charm lies in its slow pace. Visitors can take peaceful walks, explore the Narayan-Nagini temple with its traditional Kinnauri craftsmanship, or visit the serene Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar Monastery. A short drive away are Roghi village and a viewpoint dramatically known as 'Suicide Point', both offering stunning valley vistas.
Planning Your Himalayan Escape
The best time to visit Sangla and Kalpa for clear skies and pleasant weather is during the autumn months of September and October. This period perfectly coincides with the pre-Diwali festive season, offering crisp air and spectacular mountain views. The journey itself is an adventure. The most common route is by road from Shimla, which is about a 230 km drive to Sangla. The entire circuit, including Kalpa, lies on the historic Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH-5). Accommodation options range from cozy homestays and guesthouses to riverside camps, particularly in Sangla. Given the increasing popularity, booking your stay a few weeks in advance is advisable, although many travellers are also known to book spontaneously.
