From Stiff Steps to Agile Exploration
The spacesuits of the Apollo program were a monumental achievement, but they were also incredibly rigid. Astronauts had to expend significant energy just to move, and tasks like bending down or picking up a rock were major challenges. Those historic moonwalks
were characterized by stiff-legged gaits and occasional tumbles. For the Artemis program, which aims to establish a long-term presence on the Moon and conduct complex scientific research, a new approach was needed. NASA needed a suit that would allow astronauts to be true geological field scientists, not just visitors. This meant they had to be able to walk, bend, kneel, and interact with the landscape in a natural way.
Introducing the AxEMU Spacesuit
NASA has partnered with commercial company Axiom Space to develop and provide the next-generation suits, known as the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU). Building upon years of NASA's own research on its xEMU prototype, Axiom is delivering a suit that functions less like a bulky container and more like a personalized spacecraft. Under this commercial model, NASA purchases moonwalking services from Axiom, which is responsible for the design, production, and testing of the suits. This partnership allows NASA to focus on the overall mission while leveraging private sector innovation. The final suits worn on the Moon will be white to reflect heat, but the prototypes have been showcased in a dark gray material.
Engineered for Unprecedented Mobility
The key to the AxEMU's superior performance lies in its joints. Unlike the stiff fabric of older suits, the new design incorporates advanced materials and multiple bearing-based joints at the shoulders, waist, hips, knees, and ankles. This architecture provides an incredible range of motion that was impossible in Apollo-era suits. Astronauts testing the prototypes can perform deep squats, kneel on both knees, twist at the waist, and even perform walking lunges—movements crucial for collecting geological samples and setting up equipment on the uneven terrain of the lunar South Pole. The gloves, a notoriously difficult component to design, are also far more flexible, reducing hand fatigue and allowing for greater dexterity when handling tools.
A Suit for Every Astronaut
Another significant advancement is the suit's sizing and accessibility. The Apollo suits were custom-built for each astronaut. The AxEMU, in contrast, is designed to be highly adjustable, accommodating a much wider range of male and female body types. This modularity not only makes the program more inclusive, allowing NASA to assign missions to a broader pool of astronauts, but it also streamlines logistics. Astronauts enter the suit through a rear-hatch design, which is a simpler and more efficient process than the multi-layered dressing required for previous suits.
Unlocking the Scientific Potential of the Moon
The improved mobility is not just for comfort; it directly translates to better science. The Artemis missions are focused on the lunar South Pole, a region believed to hold water ice in permanently shadowed craters. Exploring this challenging landscape and performing tasks like drilling for core samples requires a level of agility that was previously unattainable. With the AxEMU, astronauts will be able to venture further, work for longer periods—up to eight hours per spacewalk—and perform more complex experiments. The suits also feature helmet-mounted HD cameras and lighting, providing scientists on Earth with a crystal-clear view of the exploration as it happens.
