A Lifeline to Earth Goes Down
The International Space Station (ISS) relies on a sophisticated communications network to stay connected with Mission Control in Houston. A key piece of this hardware is the Space-to-Ground Antenna (SGANT), which enables the high-speed data transmission
necessary for everything from scientific experiments to video calls. When one of these vital antennas stopped working properly last November, NASA knew a repair was inevitable. While a redundant system kept communications open, restoring the station to full operational capacity became a top priority for the Expedition 75 crew. The plan involved replacing the faulty unit with a spare that was already stored outside the station.
A Tale of Two Spacewalks
On August 18, NASA astronaut Anil Menon and European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Sophie Adenot ventured outside the station for their first spacewalk. Their mission was to remove the failed antenna. However, the task proved more challenging than anticipated. The astronauts encountered difficulties with stubborn electrical cables and bolts, consuming precious time. After six hours and 23 minutes, they had successfully removed the faulty hardware and secured it to the station's truss, but there was no time left to install the replacement. Mission Control decided to postpone the installation for a second spacewalk, making this a two-part repair job.
Executing the Installation
On August 25, Menon and Adenot suited up and exited the Quest airlock once again to finish what they started. For this second spacewalk, which lasted six and a half hours, the objectives were clear. Menon, positioned on the end of the Canadarm2 robotic arm, and Adenot, moving by hand, first retrieved the spare antenna from its external storage platform. They then navigated to the worksite on the Z-1 truss, where they meticulously mounted and connected the new hardware to the station's power and data systems. This was Menon's third career spacewalk and the second for Adenot, who had become the first French woman to perform a spacewalk during the first outing on August 18.
Mission Success and a Restored Link
With the new antenna in place, the final step of the second spacewalk involved moving the old, faulty unit to a more permanent storage location. Once the astronauts were safely back inside and the new hardware was powered up, initial checks from the ground were positive, showing good power and data transmission. Flight controllers in Houston were ecstatic. "You just saved the video dish," astronaut Anne McClain radioed up to the crew, celebrating the restored connection. The successful installation not only brings the station's communication system back to full redundancy but also stands as a testament to the skill, training, and persistence required to conduct complex maintenance in one of the most challenging environments imaginable.
